Did you know that in Australia, you can visit your GP and ask for a “wellness plan”. This will mean you are given X number of bulk-billed visits to a dietitian, and an exercise physiologist. For non Aussies, bulk billed translates to completely cost free to the patient.

For the first two months of 2016, I was doing pretty well on my own. I lost 10kg. After my diverticulitis adventure, I was struggling a little and I got stuck at 85kg for over a month. Part of that was the enforced “none at all” and then “just a little exercise” directive I was given.

Part of that was struggling to replace some of the foods that I was using to help me lose weight – eg nuts are mostly out other than softer nuts like macadamias and pecans, anything with seeds are mostly out eg tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries, cucumber. I ended up replacing these better foods with things that were around the same amount of calories but much less nutritional value, like hot cross buns! I won’t lie, I love a hot cross bun.

Lunches were the most difficult to fix, because I was mostly having the same thing every day and it involved tomatoes. I’m someone who likes to stick to something, when I love it and it works for me.

So my doctor recommended the wellness plan option, and scheduled an appointment with the dietician, and the exercise physiologist – hereafter known as trainer, because that is too long to type, lol.

The weekend before the appointment we happened to be at Shellharbour and I wanted to visit the health food store there and get some advice about protein. I usually steer clear of these places because my experiences with them have been Not Great, Bob. Usually the ones around here are staffed by muscly, burly blokes who are not the brightest bulb on the tree. And this place was no exception to the rule. I’ll now recreate the discussion for you.

Me – “I want to get some protein. Just protein. I don’t want anything else in there. No stevia, no sweeteners, no extras. Just protein.”

Him – “Ok, well generally the reason they put those things in there is because protein tastes pretty bad on its own.”

Me – “It won’t be on its own, I will be flavouring it myself. With something like this.” (holds up powdered peanut butter which I already had found and was intending to purchase) “Or with cocoa powder, maybe a little maple syrup if it needs sweetening.”

Him – “Ok, then you could try this one. But I am warning you now, you will not like how it tastes.”

Me – “Is there maybe a smaller packet I could try, to see if I like it?”

Him – “This is the smallest size.”

Ok then, armed with 1kg of Whey Protein, and the powdered peanut butter, I left victorious. Momentarily. Because I really was not sure what I should do with this stuff. However I had my dietitian appointment coming up and I figured she could clue me in.

Of course the first thing I did when I got home was open the packet and taste this stuff. I can now tell you how protein tastes to me. Like absolutely nothing. It has no flavour at all. You could add it to anything and I would say the only thing you will notice is the occasional grainy, gritty texture. Because it does have a bit of a texture to it.

The second thing I did was make a shake with the peanut butter powder. OMG it tastes incredible. And I discovered you can get it at Coles, too! Which is good because I am going to be buying a lot of this. If you like peanut butter or peanuts, you will LOVE this stuff.

So I took these things along with me, plus my MyFitnessPal records for the past 3.5 months along to see the dietitian. She asked me a lot of questions and then she gave me absolute gold in return. Here are the goldest nuggets –

1. Beetroot would work well with ham and cream cheese on a rice cracker, for lunches. It is EPIC, I’m telling you. But she would like me to try and add tomatoes back in, because I had tolerated them fine for 40+ years, plus the seeds are pretty soft.

2. Protein shakes are best to have around 30 minutes after exercise. If I use 1 cup of milk that is a good place to get one of my daily serves of dairy. To begin with I should start with half a serving (15g = 13g protein) and see how that goes. If I feel like I need more, I can work my way up to 30g. The peanut butter powder has 4g protein for 1 tablespoon. So in one small shake, I get 17g protein.

She gave me some suggestions to try with the shakes, eg add greek yoghurt, freeze some bananas and add them in, strawberries and other berries should be fine if my blender is good enough.

Here is the protein shake recipe I am loving a lot.

40g RAW flavour WPI protein powder
1 tablespoon PB2 – Peanut butter powder
1 teaspoon cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
35g-40g frozen banana – I break them into pieces and freeze.
1 cup almond milk.

Updated 1 January 2018 – my current favourite recipe is –

40g RAW flavour WPI protein powder
1 teaspoon cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
35g-40g frozen banana – I break them into pieces and freeze.
100mls almond milk.
100mls brewed espresso coffee
1 frozen espresso coffee icecube.
(instant or filtered coffee will also work)

Sometimes I will leave the cocoa powder or the cinnamon out, depends how I am feeling that day. I find the banana sweetens it enough, but I have added a touch of maple sugar once to see what that was like. It wasn’t really needed.

Where Do I Get My Protein From?

I’ve tried all kinds of options for buying protein and by far the cheapest and most reasonable is Bulk Nutrients. They are based in Tasmania. I usually buy in bulk 5kg of protein at one time because I know I am going to use it. Just for an idea of how long that will last me – I use 40g in a shake and there is 1000g in a kilo. I can make 25 shakes from 1kg.

What Kind Of Protein Do I Buy?

I choose Whey Protein Isolate as it is a smaller molecule. I buy it in the raw flavour because all the flavoured versions have artificial sweetener and I don’t love the aftertaste of it. I don’t need to add sweetener and I add my own flavours. ;)

You might want to consider some of the other options available. There is a slightly larger molecule Whey Protein Concentrate available and it is a bit cheaper. I used to buy that and it was perfectly fine. They now have hemp protein in the raw flavour if you are looking for a vegan option – it is dairy and lactose free.

How Do I Blend It?

I was looking for a small cup blender specifically for these shakes because the better you blend them, the less texture of protein you notice. I ended up with the Nutri Ninja and I bought a couple of extra cups for it. The awesomeness I will be whizzing up in this thing is endless! When you go looking for a blender you want to make sure and get one that can handle ice and frozen bananas. Nutribullet is another one I looked at.

When Do I Eat It?

Usually I have my shake between 12pm-1pm and it leaves me feeling very full. I end up needing less dinner as a result, which is also an epic win.

How Am I Now?

Health wise I am back to where I was at the end of February. I am starting to feel more comfortable exercise wise and I’m ok with pushing myself a bit harder now.

The weight loss has started back on a downward trend, I’ve seen the number 84 on the scales now. My goal is 70kg by October however I am not sure how 70kg will work for me. We’ll wait and see.

My nutrition is a LOT better, and I find I do not want things I used to want. The closest I will get to a potato chip now is Vege Chips – and if you have not tried those, you should.

I’m still a shitty blog friend – and a shitty blogger – right now, and I am still deeply apologetic for that. On the other hand, I am a lot more fit and active than I was back when I was a good blog friend and good blogger, and that is something which is very important to me right now, especially with a general anesthetic for the colonoscopy in my near-ish future. I can’t be sorry about that – it is what I need to do for myself right now. :)

All of my “snacks” that I have posted are lunches I regularly eat. Those snacks take time to put together – especially if one has to boil the eggs first. I have got into the habit of boiling eggs regularly at night so I have them ready to peel for the next day.

There are some days when I just feel like nibbling on stuff for lunch. So this is what I normally put together when that happens, though I might swap out one of the items for something else – eg pickled onions for olives, or apple for carrot sticks. I might add some hummus or spicy capsicum dip to eat with the crackers. I might swap the vintage cheddar for feta.

I want to tell you about these wafer crackers. I like them best of any cracker type biscuit I have tried – most of the others I find to be too floury for my taste. The wafer crackers are super crunchy and not floury at all. I love the ones with cracked pepper in them – that way I don’t have to add any seasoning at all. You can get plain ones as well. Here is the nutritional info –

The pickled onions are a little high in sodium – for me that is not an issue, because I have low blood pressure and have been instructed to keep my salt intake at a decent level. If I were watching my sodium I would do some reading of jars and try to find an option with less sodium. I like the Fehlberg ones better than any of the other pickled onions I have tried, and Aldi had a 1kg jar of them for a very low price so I grabbed one – I wish I had grabbed a couple! ;)

Thus far on Snoskred Snacks, we have exclusively used rice crackers. I was looking for a lower sodium option to replace bread on some occasions for The Other Half and we have been trying out some different wraps recently. I found one that I really like for myself, and I found a super low sodium one by Mountain Bread which The Other Half quite likes.

Today, I will tell you the story of my ham, egg, cream cheese and tomato wrap with salt and pepper. So first you add cream cheese, then layer on some ham. Here you see I have begun the next step which is adding eggs – yet another double yolker from Manning Valley!

I added in an egg from our girls as well, and salt and pepper.

The final step – layer on the tomato. I like to fold in the sides and then flip up the bottom. These stayed together pretty well, there was no dripping and no splitting. Happy moments! I have also used these wraps for home made tacos – we’re off the store bought packets as they have way too much sodium.

I used the Wattle Valley wholegrain soft wraps which are available at Aldi and Coles for these wraps, here is what the packet looks like. These wholegrain wraps are super delicious and I will be stocking up on them.

The other wraps I mentioned by Mountain Bread are square, so a little bit more convenient for wrapping in some ways. I can make them into a square sandwich, for The Other Half whose one complaint about moving away from bread was inconvenience..

To me, the most important function of any kind of wrap is staying together. So for me this wrap was a bit of an epic fail.

While the splits don’t matter so much with sandwiches for The Other Half who only likes to eat ham, cheese, egg and lettuce, it does matter a lot more when you are putting things that tend to drip – like tomato – into a wrap. I’ll try a few more of the Mountain Bread varieties to see if any of them are a bit more reliable, wrap wise. I do like that they have so few ingredients.

We’ve now had 8 fortnightly installments of Snoskred Snacks – this is the final one for 2015. This feature will return in 2016 though it will be less often, perhaps just once a month. I do still have some snacks which have not yet made an appearance here.

Greenwell Point Chinese Restaurant

On our very first visit to this area when my parents were told they would be transferred here, we went for a drive to Greenwell Point. We drove past this little club with a Chinese restaurant attached and thought it looked like a place we should try. Little did we know that we would be eating there at least once a month and sometimes once a week, for the next 10 years. It is our go-to place to take our visitors.

There are two tables that seat 10, if you are bringing a large party you *always* want to make a booking here. If you are visiting in school holidays, you NEED to make a booking or else you might not get a table, even for a small party. If you cannot get a table inside the restaurant, you can always order take away and eat it out in the bowling club or take it home with you.

There are usually two sittings at most of the tables – one between 5-630 and one between 7-8.30 – so if you can’t get a table at the time you want, try asking for earlier or later. Outfit wise, I recommend layering up, sometimes the wind coming off the water can be cool and if you are sitting near the large glass windows that area can sometimes get a little chilly.

For starters we usually pick one of two things – Sang Choy Bow, or Mini Spring Rolls and Fried Dim Sims. Note – you only get 6 of each – we specifically asked for 8 on this occasion as there were 8 of us. You can also get the Dim Sims steamed, which we have done before too. They come with a sauce similar to sweet and sour sauce. We’ve tried all the starters and they are all fantastic, the soups are also great. The prawn toast is delicious too.

King Prawns in Garlic Brown Sauce was once brought to us by accident. It is pretty amazing to say out of 10 years of dining here, that was the only time we ever had an item brought to us by miscommunication with the order taker. We were very thankful it happened, because this is 100 times better than regular garlic prawns and we have been ordering this dish ever since.

There are several sizzling dishes on the menu – here you see Sizzling Steak. I will say three things. Do not touch the plate, because it is incredibly hot! Be careful where you put this on the table, because tiny sizzling spatters will fly into the air, and you will not be moving this plate. If you are wearing glasses, do not sit near this dish.

This is Fried Duck in Plum Sauce. This dish is a real star, especially if you like duck. I do not like duck, but I will still eat this dish. If you do not like duck, but people with you do like it and they order this, try a piece and see if you like it. You might be surprised.

Fried Pork in BBQ – Salt and Pepper Squid

I do not usually like a lot of pork, but I enjoy this dish, especially the smaller crispy pieces. The Salt and Pepper squid is incredible, it has never been anything but incredible. Just don’t order it as take away, because it loses the crispiness of the batter. If you want squid as a take away dish, try one of the many other variations on the menu.

This is our most recent star dish – butter pepper chicken. I’ve never seen this on a menu anywhere else, the sauce is a combination of butter and pepper, which does not sound like a good thing to order. However something happens here – perhaps the pepper cuts through the richness of the butter, or maybe there is another secret ingredient doing that job.. it is amazing. The mushrooms are amazing as well.

With so many visits over the years, we have tried almost everything on the menu at least once. We like to order several mains and rice and share what we’ve ordered. We have gone through stages where one particular thing would have to be ordered on every visit, and then we’d try something else and move onto that.

We are not big on ordering dessert here – they do have fried icecream and we’ve had it and enjoyed it. The Bistro out in the club does some awesome desserts if you are looking for something a little more fancy than the desserts offered at the Chinese. We have never eaten at the Bistro because the Chinese is just too amazing.

You should be aware that my Dad declines the concept of this review. When I started taking food photos, he asked why I was doing that, and I said I was going to write a review because nobody had reviewed this place on Zomato – it is on Tripadvisor.

“No, don’t do that” Dad said. “If you tell everyone about this place, we won’t be able to get a table anymore”. Sorry Dad, the food here is so good, the world needs to know about it. :) We’ll just have to book a little earlier.

It is now time to pay full respect to one snack I ate a lot this past couple of months. The very humble cream cheese, egg, tomato, ham, salt and pepper snack. There was a two week streak of this snack after my Avocado Incident. So how do we make this?

First, a layer of cream cheese, then the eggs. Do you see all those double yolkers there? My two Manning Valley eggs both were double yolkers on this day. The Other Half said I should buy a lotto ticket. :)

I like to salt and pepper them up good.

Then layer on the tomato. Sometimes I get huge beefsteak tomatoes where you only need one slice, sometimes the tomatoes are smaller and I have to get creative like I did here. You definitely want to try and get all the egg covered, to preserve the rice cracker-cream cheese-egg-tomato-ham ratio. :)

If I am feeling low on salt, I usually add some salt to the top of the tomatoes. I have low blood pressure and have been advised to make sure I get *enough* salt, VS The Other Half who has high blood pressure and has been advised to cut down his salt intake. Finally add your ham, and you are done-ski!

There is something about this snack, these simple flavours put together really sing. You do need to be a little careful because the tomato can sometimes get a little drippy.

The best part about this snack – any leftover tomato or egg is taken out to the chooks. Chooks do like eating egg, this may come as a surprise to some of you. But even more than that, a couple of my girls really love tomato, one in particular deeply loves tomato seeds.

On a chook level, there is a hierarchy of snacks. My girls love blueberries the most at the moment – any hint of blueberries and they all run up to me trumpeting. Watermelon and strawberries are next, then tomato, then egg, then cauliflower leaves or any kind of greens. If you give them an actual cauliflower they will peck it into an Alien Landform. They do not get sweet corn in summer because it raises their body temperature – that is their favourite winter snack.

On a human level, this lunch snack is one of my all time favourites and in general will be made every second day.

And now for something completely different, and a little bit posh. I’m going to talk about taking a dinner item and saving it for the next days snack, but in order to do this I need to tell you about the dinner, and a little trick my Chinese Aunt taught me involving prawns/shrimp. Be warned, you are about to see some uncooked shrimp here!

So I took my Chinese Aunt and my Uncle to the fish shop a few weeks back when their car had been shipped to Adelaide and they needed to go shopping. They had some uncooked prawns that were from Australia which had their shells. They had uncooked prawns completely shelled and de-veined which were from China. They were the exact same price.

I said get the Chinese ones – less work for the same money. My uncle was adamant that the Australian ones must be purchased. I said “That’s perfectly fine for you to say, but you won’t be the one doing the work, will you?” Of course he did not. But I am grateful he insisted purely because of the trick she taught me – you use scissors! Here is an internet tutorial. (note – next time I won’t cut off the tail tips – I was doing it exactly how she did it which is slightly different from the tutorial)

So after they moved to Adelaide and I had a prawn craving, I picked up half a kilo of large Aussie green prawns, having dishwashed my scissors beforehand so they were spotlessly clean, and I got to work. After they were shelled, de-veined and rinsed, I marinated them in some lemon and lime juice. I did the same with some chicken for The Other Half, then they all went for a quick dip into the salt and pepper seasoning.

The pack seen above comes from Aldi – they have a Caesar one which we’ve had before and loved. This was our first time with the lime chili pack. We would definitely have this again – they do a Peri Peri and I think kebab? pack as well which we will be trying eventually. However the Caesar one is our favourite thus far.

After the marinade and the salt and pepper seasoning, the prawns and then the chicken were cooked in a frypan. I cut up and washed some Cos lettuce, added some cheese, and dinner was served. I could have added tomato and avocado to these for myself however I am the only one who eats those things so I generally save them for lunches. This was pretty quick and easy. I had both chicken and prawns, and I saved some prawns for my lunch the next day. Here they are.

And here is the lunch – I must say this happened during my two week no avocado time. I would highly recommend using sliced avocado as the base for this snack. That is what I wanted to do, however, tomato it was.

These prawns were super large so I only made 2 snacks this day. They were delicious! I will be trying this again with avocado soon.

The Huskisson – Review

On a sunny Sunday in early November, we revisited one of our favourite local places to eat. They have this delicious pizza there which I was suddenly craving, friends were visiting, the timing seemed perfect. This place has a fantastic location as you can see by the images.

It should be noted, I previously reviewed The Huskisson @Tripadvisor on May 13 2013. In that review I mentioned some issues with the design of the place plus they were only using one till for food ordering.

On a previous revisit in 2014 I noticed they were doing some internal renovations and I had hoped these design issues would have been fixed. Sadly they were not fixed. People are still queuing across a walk way and there is still only one till. We ended up sitting near the ordering area. I had a great view of the pass and that was designed quite badly as well, with a staff member there the whole time moving plates around, trying to work out what food went with which receipt and then using a buzzer system to let people know their food was ready.

Design issues aside, the food is still fantastic here. The bruschetta ($14 for 3 pieces) is amazing. It has avocado on it! I’d never had it with avocado before finding that here and it is a brilliant addition. The bruschetta also has tomato, fresh basil, toasted ciabatta, and fetta. It arrives on a plate which has been drizzled with a gorgeously sticky balsamic vinegar glaze.

You can see the menu here. For mains, 3 people ordered fish and chips ($24.50) – they all said it was delicious.

The Other Half went for the Waygu burger ($19.50) minus the beetroot relish because he does not like beetroot.

One friend chose the Chicken Parmigiana ($23.50). I’ve had that before and it is very tasty as well.

But me, I cannot go past the Husky Pizza ($20), which has Danish salami, chorizo, roast chicken, mushrooms, Spanish onion, roast capsicum, olives, fresh basil, prawns, Napoli sauce, mozzarella cheese. In fact, the pizza was even better than ever before. They did something to the base and it was super thin, crispy, crunchy and just awesome. I will make a very large call here and suggest this is one of the best pizzas in the Shoalhaven. You can see the full menu here.

Our lunch was delicious and much enjoyed by all. We will return many times. If you visit and want a peaceful lunch, I recommend sitting as far as possible from the ordering area and the pass. If you want some entertainment, then I do recommend sitting near both of those things!

Snoskred Snacks #5

It is time to welcome my good friend the Avocado to Snoskred Snacks. Given my deep love for them it seems incredible to me that I’ve written 4 of these posts without them appearing! The Aldi avocados were not very ripe when I first started writing these posts, though I bought some not ripe ones and left them out on the counter for a few days to ripen them up.

On this particular day I had a boiled egg left over from previous snack days, so I thought I would use it up and layer it under the avocado. I saved that snack right till the end to eat.

On top of the avocado I generally like chicken or turkey. Aldi sells a sliced chicken and turkey. Both of these are “manufactured meat” products not fresh chicken breast and turkey sliced, which would be my first preference. However those things are more expensive, more difficult to seek out, don’t keep as long, and are not the kind of thing I would use for an every day snack.

I would prefer to roast some chicken breast myself and slice it, and that might be something I look into given I just read the ingredients for these manufactured meat things when writing this post. *shudder* Nutritionally these slices are probably not awesome. The idea here is healthy snacks, so these might be off the menu for me in the future.

When Snacks Attack

I clearly remember my home ec teacher telling me “I’ve never once cut myself without looking at what I was doing and thinking “This is a really stupid thing to do” right before I stabbed myself with the knife”.

For me it has always been the total opposite. I never, ever see my injury coming ahead of time. So in late October when I was making lunch on a Saturday, to discover I had actually stuck a knife through the avocado pit, through the outside of the avocado, and straight through my left index finger was an unhappy surprise.

Do not fear, I will not show you any photos of the injury – instead I will show you a photo of the avocado with the knife still in it. This is some hours later after I got home from the hospital.

Everything is very hazy to me about how it actually happened. I do remember looking down and seeing the tip of the knife sticking out of my finger and vaguely wondering what the heck it was doing there before realising I had cut myself. However the actuality of what had happened did not make proper sense in my brain for some time.

Somehow – without thinking about it or perhaps in a panic- I removed the knife from my hand, and went over to the sink to rinse out the cut.I rinsed it out in the sink and then wrapped some paper towel around it thinking it wasn’t too bad.

I was keeping pressure on the cut and it seemed like it had sealed nicely, no blood was coming out of the cut at all. But where was all the other blood coming from? It was then I realised the cut I was putting pressure on was the exit wound, and there was an *entry* wound on the other side of my finger.

That is around the time I went into shock, waves of nausea were washing over me, and I felt like I was going to pass out. Knowing that this was a bad cut, The Other Half was out for the day with my car, and I would need to go to hospital for a tetanus shot and to have it cleaned out at a minimum, I called my parents right away. Mum arrived soon afterwards and off we went to the hospital.

They took a quick look at the finger, bandaged it up nicely to await the doctor, and then asked when my last Tetanus shot was. I remember it clearly – when I was attacked by the dog at age 16, so over 20 years ago. Ok, you get a tetanus shot today. What a huge amount of fun that was, NOT.

Back out to the waiting room, to wait, for about 2 hours. Then I got called back in and seen by two doctors who could not figure out how I had managed to do this. They were trying to tell me this was not an entry and exit wound but two completely separate cuts, because I would have hit bone if this was a puncture wound.

I ended up having to draw the knife for them and I wished I had taken a photo of the knife before leaving home. There is a tip for your next emergency room visit. :) I explained this was a filleting knife and it was entirely possible it had hit – and cut – bone on the way through. The blade was facing the bone. Oh, you’ll need an x-ray then.

Back to the waiting room to wait for the x-ray porter, who arrived maybe 30 minutes later, x-ray done, then another long wait, then I was called in and told nothing was seen on the x-ray, no need to clean out the wound, it will be fine because I washed it myself and because I had been waiting so long it had started to heal already, and they put on a band-aid. I could have done that myself at home.

In fact I probably could have just kept pressure on it and then put a bandaid on and it would likely have been fine but I figured that when you stick a knife *through* your finger, that is potentially a serious injury and requires medical attention. Around here there are no doctors open on the weekend, so that means a hospital trip, and I don’t have any tetanus shots at home.

It was an incredibly stupid thing to do, and the wrong knife to be using for this particular job. I’m usually fairly good with my knife skills – obviously, considering I have gone over 20 years without a tetanus shot.

The good news is, the tetanus shot hurts far more than the cut ever did. The cut had entirely healed over before the huge lump in my arm from the shot went away.

The bad news is, avocado is off the menu for the time being. I always have a lot of trouble getting the pits out. :/

As mentioned in Snoskred Snacks 3, this time we are going to put something else on top of the tomatoes. What could it be?

Aldi have this Smoked Salmon for $6.99 for a 200g packet. In most other supermarkets, you’d get 50g for that kind of money. 200g is usually $10 or more, though on occasion you can find it on special for slightly more than you pay for this Aldi version. I’ve tried all the versions and the Aldi one is excellent.

I’ve made this snack on toast with the tomatoes grilled before in winter, and I quite like that as an occasional snack. However you cannot toast a rice cake, because bad things will happen. At least, it says so on the packet and I have no intentions of testing this out, thanks to That Terrifying Incident With A Fruit Muffin Where I Took Out All Phones And Computers In The Call Centre, For Two Hours In The Middle Of A Work Day, Thus Rendering The Call Centre Completely Inoperable.

I do not recommend this as a daily snack, but once in a while the smoked salmon is a lovely change from the ham.

Cream cheese spread and Tomatoes! I have also added mustard to this in the past.

I should take a moment to talk about the cream cheese spread. Aldi make two versions – a regular and a lite. I’ve used them both in my No Bake Cheesecake recipe – to me they taste almost identical but the lite one is less dense.

For those who like to read the nutrition panel, this is for the light one. :) Me personally I probably get 15-20 servings per container. I do not like to spread it very thickly. I just want to get the flavour of it, not drown in it with every bite I take. :) If you do not like cream cheese spread but you still want to spread something on the rice cracker, I suggest Hommus or maybe smashed avocado.

You could stop with the tomatoes if you wanted to. I always like to salt and pepper my rice cake snacks well because I find that brings out the natural flavour of whatever has been placed on top.

So a word about ham and nutritional info. Alternatively, a slightly embarassing Snoskred story. We’ve been enjoying this Don ham. One day I read the nutritional info on the packet – which looks like this.

Having used several of these packets previously, I know in each packet there are 12 slices of ham. How can I divide 12 slices into 16 serves, I thought! How ridiculous, I thought. They are really trying hard to hide how much sodium is in this stuff.

A couple of weeks later I sent an email to Sephy titled “Mathematical” with the following content –

“The Don ham I have been buying says there are 16 serves in a packet, but there are only 12 slices of ham. *boggle* How would I have to divide these round slices of ham up in order to get 16 equal serves out of them?”

His reply – “You take the 12 pieces and cut them in fours. That will give you 48 pieces. Give each person three slices and you’ll have 16 servings.”

Then I arrived back at my computer with photos, and realised they mean there are 16 servings in the 4 packets. I’m no genius, but I would suggest if you are making 4 packets of 100g, you should probably give the nutritional info for each *packet* of 100g. Not many people are going to eat all 4 packets at once.

So, all this to say, 3 slices of ham = 1 serving. And that will give you 10% of your daily required sodium intake. That is fine for me because I have low blood pressure and am actually supposed to ingest more salt according to my doctor. For the other half, with high blood pressure, this ham is not so great. I’ll have to do some packet comparisons on future shopping trips. But we love the taste of this one.

Next time, I will put something else on top of tomatoes. :)
