Today we go out..

For a little drive. We went to some beaches! YAY!

drive0

First we went to Murray’s Beach, where you may hike, sightsee, bicycle and fall off cliffs. You may not light fires, camp, or stick spear things with ropes attached into fish, as you can see in this picture.

drive01 We walked through a little forest (300 metres, according to the sign) and the forest was quite pretty and possibly a little scary.

drive

Then we ended up here.

We started walking down the beach this way

but soon after the other half was surprised by a naked man venturing out of the bushes and into the ocean. He promptly suggested we go the other way. I did not even notice they were naked, I was too busy taking photos of shells.

aadrive

He was most disturbed as there were children on the beach and felt it was very inappropriate. I disagreed, hey, if they want to let it all hang out, and nobody’s arresting them, and it doesn’t say on the sign you can’t take off your clothes, I don’t mind them wandering around in their birthday suits. I would be much more offended by a dog on a beach than a naked person. Then he said he was worried they might think we were trying to take photos of them, as we have such a huge lens and all. I said, well as long as I am pointing it at the sand and shells, I don’t think they’ll be worried about that, but hey, there’s rock pools over there, lets go that way.

aadrive1

It’s lucky we did go that way, because we made a new friend.

drive2

After a nice long beach walk, we decide to leave.

aadrive2

Other half was not happy because I had sandy foot (both were sandy but this is a photo of one of them and the only photo of me ever on this blog as yet so enjoy it) and no place to wash off sand. I said not to worry, I will vacuum the car. And I will, one day, probably right before we sell it. ;)

So we get back in the car and venture off to other beaches. We drive to Jervis Bay (the entire bay is named that but there is also a town named that) and I cannot show you a photo of a wallaby standing right beside the road because I apparently do not point very well. I’m yelling “Look over there, look over there!” and pointing wildly at the side of the road at this rather large brown creature, and the other half was unable to see what on earth all the fuss was about. We drove back around the block to see if we could see it again, but it must have crossed the road.

And now here is a photo of the beach that belongs to the Navy. In an interesting change of procedure, they have actually something that resembles a port nearby. *near* WATER! I have always found it hilarious that there is a Navy base in Canberra, with only a manmade lake nearby and nowhere to launch ships within a 100km drive. But they do have all those handy helicopters and jets and stuff.

All the places above are a part of Booderee National Park. All this less than 50kms from my doorstep. Wow, I’s lucky. :)

Tomorrow, I may show you more pics from this lovely drive! Except we loved this place so much today, first thing in the morning we’re going to check out snorkelling gear and wetsuits. Well, a wetsuit for me at least, there’s jellyfish in those waters, and it’s a little cool. :)

Its not how big it is..

Really, it’s not. It’s the *quality* that is important. Which is why when we last bought camera equipment, we threw money (about $7,000) to the photo people and bought this.

canoncamera

Yes, it’s a crappy pic, I took it with my camera phone. Well, how can you take a photo of the camera with the camera? Doh! It’s a Canon d10 camera body (quite old now, they’re onto the d30 now I think) but the more important part is the L series lens. I can’t explain why it is important, it just *is*. It enables me to take some incredible pics. It is the heaviest thing I’ve ever carried. You need to go into training to take this to the zoo for a day, I’m telling you. It’s not easy to carry it around.

However, it is *worth* carrying it around because you get some incredible pics. I’ve got like 10,000 of them on this computer. I can’t even dig through them to pick out the great ones, there’s too many and I have chores to do.

But I’ll let you in on a little secret. When I’m taking my photos of the day, I hadn’t been using this lens. It was just too heavy to get started with. I wanted to get into the habit of taking them often, and plenty of them, and I knew the bigger lens would get in the way of that. So I’ve been using a much smaller one. And getting very nice results, even if I do say so myself.

All that changed on the 2nd of December, when I finally decided it was time. I’ve been using the big lens since then. You can see all my pics here.

Now I hear you guys all going “But why did you spend so much money?” – We’d had 5 digital cameras over the years, none of them worth less than $2,000, and none of them comparing even slightly with this one. We finally had learnt the lesson – If you are going to do something, do it properly. Don’t mess about. Invest wisely. It’s worth it. Even if you have to put it on the credit card. Life is short. Spend it while you can.

A photo a day for 30 days..

results in this..

We also now have set up a page for one photo a week, if you think you could manage that head on over there and check it out, sign up, we’ll send you an invite to the blog.

It’s a little easier than a photo a day. With either project, the whole idea is really to get you using your camera more often, and learning from other photographers on ways you can improve your pics, and most of all to have fun with it!

I have a very nice sense of accomplishment to go with my 30 photos. Just think, you could have that too! :) NICE!

Surprises..

Rabbitch posted about this yesterday, and now I’m laughing myself hysterical as well.. :)

As we were walking up the street to my parents for dinner tonight, we saw the little stray cat that likes to visit the windows of my house and upset the kitties and hide in the storm water drains when anyone approaches her, in the drain, with three little kittens. Four cute kitty faces looking up at us. I don’t think the kitty belongs to anyone, we think she might be feral but nobody knows for sure, and I’m torn between just letting them be, and reporting them to the RSPCA so the kittens can find good homes and hopefully the cat can too. Thoughts? One bad rain storm and they could all get drowned. :( But it is summer. But weather is unpredictable. I should leave some tuna outside on a plate for them. ;)

I really don’t like Rosie O’Donnell on the View, at all. I find her self-centred. If you watch it you’ll see, she often drags the conversation around to herself. Star Jones used to do the same thing, I can’t stand that. However, I did see Rosie on the Actor’s Studio and actually quite liked her. I don’t know whether it was because the show was supposed to be about her, for a change, or whether she was just less annoying.

I don’t watch much free to air television these days. In fact I do not even know how to make my tv show me the free to air channels, and it’s been that way since we moved in here. So I often miss out on stuff which people are seeing and raving about. Tonight Desperate Housewives began on W, one of the pay tv channels. It was the first episode, and surprisingly I really enjoyed it. I think I might buy the box set.. we’ll see how cheap it is.

We’ve been going to the beach a bit lately. There’s lots of good photos there. And when you have the below not very far from your doorstep, you really have no excuse..

I’m so lame..

I can get addicted to reality tv so easily.. there’s this lame show on late night pay tv called “High School Reunion” and just one episode last week when I couldn’t sleep, I’m suckered in. Trouble is, it’s on at 3am.

must… learn… to…. use… dvd… recorder… thingy… soon…

Today the other half had to work till 10pm. A 13 hour sale. Life in retail is no fun. However, it did mean I got to eat a frozen meal for dinner and icecream with ice magic and sprinkles. yay!

Here’s a pic from the trip down the coast on the weekend..

I can’t decide..

… whether I’m annoyed or not. The internet was down, so I SMS’d the other half asking him to call me. By the time he rang, I’d already fixed it (Yes, I am a GENIUS!) but that was not why he was calling me..

OH – Would you like to go for a drive about 290kms south tomorrow?

Me – I thought we were going to Wollongong with my parents. (Wollongong is north)

OH – Well, I have to deliver about $15,000 worth of stuff to a customer. I can either pay $600 to get the truck driver to do it, or we hire a truck for $390 and do it ourselves, or we have a very unhappy customer.

Grrr. GRRRRR. I would not mind if we could go in our own car, but obviously the stuff won’t fit in there. However, we do get to go past a number of incredibly gorgeous places, so I’ll take the camera and try to make the most of it. But it is really REALLY annoying, because it will take ages to do this in the truck.

One of the places we will pass through is Narooma, it’s just the most beautiful place. I can’t describe the peace of it to you. Photos won’t even do it justice, and the only pics I have are from the one time we drove through there just about as the sun was setting. Even though it was getting dark, when I got close to the water I could tell it was the most incredible shade of green. There’s this inlet, and the water is going past at a decent speed, so you can just sit there on this little jetty and watch the water go by. So I’ll see if I can get some good pics for you tomorrow.

narooma

Edit to add – no, now I am annoyed. The other half forgot he’d already arranged to have our airconditioner installed tomorrow. He’d done a deal with the guy because he was going to be at home so he would work as the laborer and it would cost us less. And now, not. :(

Another update – now he has arranged the airconditioner man to install on Sunday instead. This means no trip to Wollongong this weekend. It’s not meant to be, clearly. But I can have me another watermelon candle from Batemans Bay..

I have cookies.. :)

We went for a drive to the big shopping centre about 50kms away. It was a nice day out. I took a few little pictures too.

alien

Some months ago we discovered something new when out driving. I’m not sure what it is supposed to be – the other half says it is a u turn bay, but there’s no signs suggesting that. It’s just in the middle of nowhere, too. I personally suspect it may be an Alien Landing Site and if we go there at – as my nephew used to call it – “Dark Time” we might find bright lights and be beamed up into the night sky.

road

Around here, there seems to be an odd way of going about fixing the roads. When something is wrong, they just seem to lay more asphalt on top of the road in a bizzare hope that this will fix the problem. This means you often find roads that look really nice for a few weeks, then the large trucks driving on them every day, the traffic, and other wear and tear, has an effect which makes it highly dangerous again. I do not think this is what the NRMA has in mind when they say fix our bloody roads.

werri2

This is the other end of Werri Beach which has appeared here before. :) There’s another shot of it on my upload for today of the 365 photo blog, which I am now up to date on ;) yay! And it’s even better because we haven’t officially started yet. I’m just kind of in training, getting the modalities in place. ;)

The beaches around here sure look nice, and if I weren’t so terrified of sharks and various other sea creatures, I might be tempted to go for a swim. But I am terrified of sharks and other sea creatures, so I think not, at the moment. I’d like to go snorkelling when it gets hot this year, maybe, on a netted beach a couple of hours south I have heard of.

A photo a day

I’ve been practising for the upcoming photo a day for 365 days thing. I’ve got a new card reader, a network of folders all ready, and I’m getting used to the camera and learning a few little tricks along the way. I’m all set up with Flickr, and you can see my pics here – and this flickr thing is so easy, anyone can do this.

So if you’re reading this and you think one photo a day is too much, that’s ok. You can do one photo a week, we won’t hold it against you. ;) That still gets you 52 photos by the end of the year, which is a nice thing to look back on. You can make your own blog for it, we’ll link to you in the sidebar. We’ve now got 5 people on board, and I expect more to jump on board the closer it gets to January 1. No need to wait, you can start now if you like, get into the habit, and get some nice Holiday Season pics. Here’s some of my shots I took a couple of hours ago – flowers and right at the bottom, you’ll see the Guards. ;)

guards

Why do they sit there? Because at night time often little creatures will fly in when this door is opened, and then they get to chase them like mad little kitties. :) They like to dead them some insects!
