The Rover – Weirdest 2014 Movie

rover

It might be a little known fact about Snoskred, but there are certain actors and actresses whose careers I follow. Wherever they might lead, I am along for the ride. Put two of them together, and I will be at the movies faster than you can blink.

This year, my follow-ment of people – plus the fact it was filmed in South Australia, a place I grew up in – brought me to this movie you may never have heard of. I will not be surprised if you did not hear of it, as it opened in about 2 theatres in Australia. Before I saw the film, the limited release was surprising to me. These are two big name stars that I really love to watch – Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson.

The premise of the film goes like this – from IMDB – 10 years after a global economic collapse, a hardened loner (Guy Pearce) pursues the men who stole his only possession, his car. Along the way, he captures one of the thieves’ brother (Robert Pattinson), and the duo form an uneasy bond during the dangerous journey.

After I saw the movie, the limited release surprised me only in that it got released at all. The second surprising fact is that the car Guy Pearce is desperately chasing is a Holden Commodore. Me, I’ve always been a Ford girl, so this entire premise is alien to me. I could understand if the car were a Ford Falcon.. :)

The premise above is sort of what happens. I’ll tell you below some of really happens, with some screenshots. Now I might venture into spoiler territory in a little bit here, so I’ll put in a read more tag, and if you want to know more, you’ll have to click through. Plus, this will be a long post with a lot of screenshots.

Of course my saying that assumes you might want to see the movie, and there are two excellent performances here in amongst a lot of nothingness and oddness, but having seen the movie I’ve got to say I wouldn’t really recommend it unless you are a serious fan of one of these two actors. Here’s why.

Favourite 2014 Fashion Moment

baftas

Lupita Nyong’o at the BAFTA awards. If you click on that link you can see it from a few different angles. It also changes colour a little under different lights..

It is a fabulous colour – and you’ll note that it fits in with my blog color scheme so I might be a bit biased – that has always been a favourite shade of green for me. The gold belt, the gold wrist cuffs.. it was such a fashion moment in a year of massive Lupita fashion moments, plus she picked up an Oscar.

There was the stunning red cape dress, the gorgeous blue Gucci which competed with the green goddess number for my favourite Lupita look in 2014.

The Fug Girls have a great post put together with many Lupita fashion moments from 2014, both good and bad. Mostly Lupita (or her stylist) picks weird shoes that don’t really go, so the better outfits are mostly the floor length gowns, except this KILLA outfit she wore on Letterman which contained Coat Porn, to boot.

FYI – seems We’re not quite done with 2014 yet here on the blog. A few posts about the place have inspired me to post a thing or two about 2014 things I saw, watched, read, or did.

Today is the day that my password protected post will publish..

It should be noted that Sephyroth guessed my password on the first try. Predictable, I am!

But unless you know me as well as Sephyroth does, or alternatively, you are psychic..

if you want to read the post today you’ll need to email me for the password

Send a quick email with the word password somewhere in it to snoskred {at} gmail {dot} com – Or use my Contact Form

Sephyroth is blogging again, and has posted a big update, if you want to drop on by.

The theme things which I wanted to fix have been fixed. If you can spot them, congratulations, because they were mostly tiny tweaks.

One other tiny note – I am going through old posts – they will fall into three categories – posts to delete, posts to keep and posts to update. I know there are dead links, videos which no longer work, and some negativity I want to remove from the WWW forevz.

Moving forward while looking back can be dangerous, I might trip over something. But I feel like it needs to be done, to move forward with the new improved 2015 Snoskred.

2014 Wrap Up

jeffprobst

Many people arrived here looking for images of Jeff Probst standing on the helicopter skid from the Survivor season 29 premiere.. and rightly so, seeing as these were my own screencaps which I took and these images cannot be found elsewhere on the web.

jeffp2

But he was not just filmed standing there – he was filmed standing there WHILE the helicopter BANKED! Man I want to do that, it is at the top of my bucket list..

On this our last day of 2014, is that time of year for looking backwards, so let us take a look back at some of the most read posts here at Snoskred Life In The Country.

Rewatch Breaking Bad

Over at my other blog Rewatch Breaking Bad, the most read post there was Pilot which was the first ever episode of Breaking Bad, and an excellent place to start a rewatch – or even a first viewing of the show – if you are a bit bored during the holiday season.

I formatted Rewatch Breaking Bad in a different manner to a normal blog in order to avoid people being spoiled – you have to click on the post in the sidebar to visit each post and the blog url takes you to a static page rather than the most recent post.

Since the first post went live on August 28, 2014 I have posted 30 episodes there – the most recent being season 3 episode 10, “Fly” which is one of my all time favourite episodes of Breaking Bad. There are 32 episodes left to post.

I Got Nothing For Ya

jeffp

Head Back To Camp, as Jeff Probst would say on Survivor. I’m feeling very Meh about the whole Christmas thing. I don’t have anything much to say about it. If you are looking for a great Christmas message, I do got something for ya – A Christmas message from (someone who is not) the Queen – that was easily the best Christmas post I’ve read this week. :)

I’m secretly a bit of a Survivor fan, and season 29 ended last week – exactly as it should have.

The Missing had an incredible and perfectly done ending. I expected they would stick the landing and they did not disappoint at all. I think that show was far and away the best tv show seen on air in 2014 – and it has already scored some Golden Globe nominations – one for Best TV movie or Miniseries and also Frances O’Connor picked up a nomination for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV movie.

Unlike a couple of other TV shows which were utterly disappointing in their ending – I’m looking at you, The Fall season 2, and Homeland..

Sometimes I see Jeff standing next to my TV when shows are airing on it, and sometimes he says exactly that line to me. Right at the end of The Fall episode 6, as the screen went to black and the credits rolled, he was there, saying “I Got Nothing For Ya, Head Back To Camp”.

With the Homeland finale he showed up fairly early on, and I kept saying wait, there is more show to watch, and he kept saying, just trust me, there’s nothing here for ya.

If there is one thing I have learned from watching Survivor, it is that Jeff is always right. :)

Recently we went through our TV folder and deleted some things, added some things, and I wrote a list of shows I have not watched in full yet. This was a great idea considering most of the shows I was watching have now ended their season.

Some of these shows, I have seen a few episodes or even entire seasons – eg The Mentalist, I watched up to season 4, but it has been a while and I think I would prefer to go back to the start and watch it from the beginning. Some of these shows I might not like – I usually give a show 3-4 episodes to grab me and if it doesn’t work by then, I’m out.

Some of these shows I have seen episodes here or there which has made me add it to the list of things I want to watch. So here’s the list I’ll be working on over the next few weeks..

A Young Doctors Notebook, Bates Motel, The Blacklist, Chuck, COPS, Criminal Minds, Deadwood, Drop Dead Diva, Extant, Falling Skies, The Following, Forever, Grays Anatomy, Hannibal, Happy Valley, The Hour, How to make it in America, Justified, The Kill Point, Last Resort, The Leftovers, Luther, Manhattan, The Mentalist, Murder In The First, Mysteries Of Laura, NCIS, Orphan Black, The Pacific, Power, Resurrection, The Thick Of It, Torchwood, Upstairs Downstairs, Wahlburgers, Without A Trace,

Swarovskis

swarovski

If you have been a reader here for even a short time, it will not come to a surprise to you that I love me some bling.

This is my official Swarovski phone case. I first saw it while on an escalator down to the bottom floor of Westfield in Sydney. It was sitting in a case of a phone shop. I knew I had to have it as soon as I saw it, because I love me some Swarovskis. It came with a certificate of authenticity.

I did not know then the reason why – when we dropped over to Paddys Markets, there were so many knock off phone cases with crystals in them. And I bought a knock off for my next phone purely because there were no official ones to be found.

PINCHme Samples

p1

I’ve been a member of PINCHme since RedPawPaw imploded back in August. PINCHme is a free sample service you can sign up for. They release samples a couple of times a month and if you are quick you can grab one. Sometimes they also have a survey which you take to see if you qualify for a sample. Here’s what I have received so far –

pinchme

On average, I have been in time to get one free sample each month thus far, though I have scored two in December. Sometimes the samples are quite large – for example they sent me 3x Fairy dishwasher tablets. I really liked those and have bought them since. We usually use Finish powder and we still do, but if I run one of those tablets through once a week the dishwasher is – no joke – SQUEAKY clean. It literally squeaks. I’ve heard it! ;)

p2

I took these Pantene samples with me to Canberra recently. I have used Pantene before and I would certainly buy it again. At the moment I am using Herbal Essences from Costco which is in a 1.2 litre bottle, but from time to time I like to switch it up and I think you get a better result if you do that..

cedel

The Bath and Body Works thingy there is to give those reading from the US an idea of the size, knowing that they might not be familiar with the size of Aussie coins. I did look for a quarter but I could not find one, sorry! ;) I know they are in this house somewhere..

I can’t wait to try this dry shampoo. I have never experienced it myself but when my Dad was in hospital in the USA they used dry shampoo which was already in a shower cap – they just put the cap on and then massaged it in. I have such fond memories of Cedel as a brand – my Grandma used their hair spray for years. Next time I am in a supermarket I am going to see if they have a regular shampoo as well, because I’d give that a try if they do.

You can join PINCHme – and give me some points for sending you their way – by clicking here – if you don’t want to give me points but still would like to join, you can visit the PINCHme website here.

Over to you –

Do you know anywhere else where I can sign up for free samples?

Have you sampled anything recently and did you like it?

What I’m Doing – Exercising

There has been a significant addition to my living space. You might remember how it was before – my living space.

I recently got the all clear from the lung specialist to get back into exercise and while I have a elliptical here already, I did not want to start with that. It has been a year since I have done any significant exercise and jumping onto the elliptical right away would be the best way to get myself injured. So I borrowed this treadmill from my parents – it was gathering dust at their place anyway.

I started out easy but within a relatively short time I was walking 5kms a day and I felt like I had to limit myself to that, because I could easily have walked for hours of an evening while watching tv..

This past week, I cranked up the pace a little and it went like this – Sunday 5km – Monday 6km – Tuesday 7km -Wednesday 8km – Thursday 9km – Friday 10km. Over the space of 6 days I walked 45km. By Friday I had a super awesome blister on my right ankle so I took the weekend off from walking, but I’ll be back at it tomorrow.

What I’m Thinking – Positives

River posted some thoughts yesterday which got me thinking.

I try to write positive letters or emails to companies and people fairly regularly and I wonder if maybe this is something which could work as a linkup, maybe once a month or so. I’ll ruminate some more on this and probably launch something in January. It would be a monthly link up thing, I think.

I think it would be something amazing to start a movement of positive feedback. We all are quick to complain when things are wrong, but how many of us send a note to the companies that make products we trust, use daily, and rely on?

The Inlinkz thing I use for the Shoe Sundays is pretty simple to use, and I can leave them open forever, so maybe I’ll do one and see if people want to link up with their positive company feedback, and whether or not they get a response as well.

What I’m Considering – Checking In

I try to visit the blogs I read and leave comments as often as I can however you may have noticed a drop off in my comments lately – first of all, check your spam bin because I might be in there – here’s how to check your spam bin on WordPress, scroll down to please note – and second of all, I was commented out by the end of November.

I’m planning a January visiting blogs spree, and I’m going to try leaving a comment as well as leaving an actual note if possible, via an email address or contact form. This is harder than you might suspect. The amount of people blogging without an email address or contact me form is way higher than it should be. :(

If you are wanting to know how to put your email address out in the open without attracting significant spam, try writing it like this – snoskred {at} gmail {dot} com <-- that one will reach me, by the way.

What I’m Obsessed With – Moonbase Inc

moonbase

The Other Half was trying to talk me out of playing Candy Crush Saga, which I had only recently tried out and I got stuck on this one level, I can’t beat it no matter what I do. It is *infuriating* which is not what a game should be, in my opinion. :( And it keeps telling me to buy boosts so I can win the level and I flat out refuse to do that.

So he showed me this neat little Moonbase Inc game, which is completely free, you can play on your Android tablet or phone. I have it on both. :) It is that awesome. I would actually pay for this game.

In Lieu Of Flowers

apricot

I respectfully decline this concept.

Every time someone special in my life has passed, the flowers that people brought to their funeral made me smile and remember the happy times, rather than focusing on the sad time of losing them.

It is my opinion that there are two groups who “In lieu of flowers” serves. The funeral directors who used to have to organise the flowers (which at some funerals could be a huge task!) and charities who get the donations.

This concept does not necessarily serve the people who are grieving a lost loved one. If the loved ones are against cut flowers, then perhaps this concept serves them well. Even so, there are many options which do not involve cut flowers. I once sent an amazing flower garden via Teleflora who have a great range of plants you can send which can be planted in a garden.

A year and a bit ago, I went to a funeral of someone I considered a great friend. The announcement said in lieu of flowers. I said, hell no. I am going to take a beautiful flower arrangement so that my friends daughter would have beauty to take home with her. I went to my local florist and I asked for apricot roses, and she had some absolutely gorgeous mini roses, so there were a lot of flowers.

People gave me the side eye when they saw my flowers. That is what upsets me the most about telling people in lieu of flowers. All of a sudden, if you bring them, you are the world’s biggest a**hole. Well, I DECLINE THAT!

On this occasion, the funeral director was super lovely, and told me there would be a time in the service where I could take my flowers and put them on the casket. As I was the only one with flowers, I was the only one that got that special moment, to go up and touch her coffin and say a proper goodbye while one of her favourite songs played, to say goodbye to someone who made my times at work extra special, to someone who I looked forward to seeing, and whose passing left an enormous hole within me and within my workplace.

At the end of the service, the coffin disappeared, not to be seen again. The flowers did re-appear, in the arms of exactly the person who I had intended them for. It made me so happy to think that she got to take them home, and I hope they put a smile on her face, like flowers always do for me.
