Ooh Is Sparkly!

A good friend of mine recently took me to a bead shop. The Other Half had actually banned me from going there because it had a lot of sparkly things. I found out that the place does lessons on how to make jewellery, so today I went in and made me a few pairs of earrings. Here’s one of them.

Pink and Purple Earrings

Making earrings is a lot easier than I would have ever expected. I spent a lovely afternoon chilling out and creating things. These are so pretty with the pink and purple cracked glass bead. I love them! The pinky bead right at the bottom of the earrings is a real freshwater pearl. :) I’m going back next week to learn to make necklaces. :)

The Queen Is Unhappy

In case you missed the news, The Queen is not very thrilled that photographs of a wedding she attended turned into 100 page wedding special in Hello magazine. And neither are the Princes Harry and William, even though William was not there. I would suspect that making such a deal with a magazine and not letting the Queen and family know about it could equal being on the shit list for many years. However, if I were the Queen, I would have been pretty happy because the outfit she was wearing was nothing short of FIERCE.

Queen wearing a fierce outfit.

Aww, isn’t that sweet. Harry is so cute. On the other hand, I would not have been so happy that Camilla Parker Bowles was wearing very similar headgear, though Camilla’s was less pretty due to being all one color.

Camilla and The Queen match hats

But then again, could it be possible that the two ladies shopped together and bought similar hats intentionally? Could it be that Her Majesty and Camilla actually like each other? I would hope so, because it is clear that Camilla makes Charles happy and she has done for many years.

I wonder what it says about me that I quite like the outfit that the Queen is wearing. Some people would probably say it looks a bit like a set of curtains but I love the colors and the concept of a large long coat over the top of a dress. Classy!

I Survived!

The engagement party went well. Nobody was carried out feet first. I was introduced to many “old family friends” by the mother of my sister’s partner, all of whom I instantly forgot the name of because my care factor was in the minus range. Also, I was very sleep deprived having only got 2.5 hours sleep the night before, as we had to be up at 4:30am.

The word head lice was mentioned - one of the multitude of kids at the party apparently has them. There was a lot of kids there and I was never told exactly who it was. I have been scratching my head ever since, and I even got The Other Half to check it with a torch, and put tea tree oil in my shampoo. I suspect this is just in my mind and there’s no real lice here, but eew. And are you scratching your head now? See, it is psychological.

I was there for the birth of my second nephew and got to cut the cord. He’s some amazingly old age now. I’ve deliberately tuned out everyone who was telling me how old he was because it was freaking me out.

And my oldest nephew will never be older than 4 in my eyes but apparently he is 13 this year, or so he informs me. And he is going to learn to drive a tractor at school. And in just a few years he will be driving a car.

We went to Ikea for lunch and my oldest nephew chose the Swedish Meatballs. I asked him to get a larger serve so Mum and I could try them. Wow, they are amazing. Mum and I both had the chicken breast in herb sauce which was also stunning. The prices are amazingly low.

So in summary, I may need valium in about 3 years to deal with the concept of a driving nephew. And I may need a lice comb. But hopefully not!

Kayak Time

We finally picked up the kayak today. As such I am a little tired so I will just post a quick pic of it next to the car. Of course it is black and white because I’ve never put a color pic of the car here. ;) Click on the picture for a larger image.

The new Kayak

Tomorrow if I get a chance I will write about lessons learned from the first trip out. But we might be making our second trip out, so we’ll see. ;)

I will mention - it is more fun and even better than I expected. And we saw a huge stingray swim right under us.  I mean huge, it was bigger than me. We got a pic of it though the pic is a little dodgy you can clearly see the massive sting in the tail. I put an arrow to where the sting is.

stingray in the water

Up the top right hand corner of the pic you can see some of the body of the ray (not all of it, like I say it was huge) and near the white dot in the middle (which is an air bubble stuck on the lens from putting the camera in the water too quick but the thing was moving!) the blurry green section is some of the sand it is kicking up.

We’ll need to get the hang of using this camera - but someone was a little freaked out by the stingray. And for once it wasn’t me! ;) Some of the underwater pics are just plain odd to look at.

A Day Out.

As mentioned yesterday today we took the kayak we want to buy for a test drive. Unlike the one we rented previously, this one was easily controlled and went where we asked it to go - even when using the paddles instead of the pedals. We managed to do some circles - a complete 360 - twice. The pedals take a little getting used to and sure work the leg muscles. I expect we will be much fitter in a few months. ;)

For those of you thinking a kayak is a cheap thing that you can pick up for a couple of hundred bucks, think again. You won’t get much change from $3,000. We placed our order and also got some other bits and pieces from the shop. By mid-day we were picking up the roof racks and hopefully we will be able to get the kayak before the weekend. It is a thing of beauty I might add.

It was an absolutely stunning day here - more like summer than autumn - and when we finished the kayaking we thought we would go snorkelling. Check out the stunning place that we like to snorkel in - Honeymoon Bay in Jervis Bay. Today I managed to get the camera out of the car afterwards. You can click on the thumbnail for a larger image.

CerebralMum Out Of Her Niche

Please welcome the one and only CerebralMum!

I’m fair-skinned and freckled. I look very Australian, in that Anglo mother-country sort of way. But I’m not. My father’s heritage is Spanish-Portuguese and my mother is Dutch, born and raised in Indonesia until Sukarno’s “guided democracy” made it unsafe to remain there. While the bullets penetrated the fence of her privileged, colonial, guarded home, my mother’s family caught the last international flight out. To New Zealand. Where I was born.

I don’t know what that makes me, but my mother, my adoptive father, my sister and I migrated to Australia just before I turned seven and North East Victoria will always be the landscape of my childhood and the image I see when I think of home.

My adoptive father was a dentist and only had a position as a locum when we arrived, working in different towns throughout the week. We moved 3 times in that first year, first Mt. Beauty, then Bright, before we finally settled in Myrtleford, where I spent the next 9 years of my life.

Myrtleford, then, was a town of about 3000 people (it still is), with 3 pubs, 4 schools (2 primary, 2 high), a Chinese restaurant and a large Italian community. It was surrounded by farms growing hops and tobacco and sheltered by a large pine plantation which provided work saw milling and pulping to make Scott’s tissues. It was close to the snow fields and in winter, on sports days, we could go and ski at Mt. Buffalo and still be back in time to hear the final bell.

But I always remember it as summer.

Even with the evergreen hills behind me, and the skiing and the floods, I always remember it as summer. Hot. Dry. Hard. With the smell of sweet, green tobacco drying in the kilns. With the tar on the roads melting, and the river calling.

We lived in town, because my adoptive father was one of the local “professionals”, the big fish in that small pond. He, along with the doctors and the businessmen, were members of the Rotary Club and played golf at the weekend. I spent as many weekends as I could out of town on my friend’s farms.

You never had to go far to see long stretches of empty, dry land; fields overgrown and long past browning. Australia is golden. I loved catching the school bus on Friday afternoon with my pyjamas in my bag, driving over the creeks and criss-crossing the countryside over roads growing increasingly rougher, stopping to drop off the other children before arriving at one of the farmhouses where the wood-burning stoves were always on and my friends’ mothers would greet me with the words “Mangia, Mangia”. (Eat. Eat.)

These were my happiest times, and the happiest places. My friends’ families were larger, and noisier, and extended. I remember hanging upside down from a big brother’s muscular arm and swinging as though I were on monkey bars. I remember strong, feminine arms elbow-deep in flour and gnocchi. I remember being teased about boys by fathers in gruff, strongly-accented English, and being offered glasses of vino for my breakfast.

I was teased a lot, actually. Because I didn’t have their native skills with spaghetti. Because I lived in town. Because I didn’t know how to pick the chickens up to put them away for the night. One of my friends swore that if I grabbed them by the ankles and held them upside down they would tuck their heads under their wings and go quietly. Let’s just say, I still don’t like picking up chickens.

But I loved being out on those farms. We would climb in the haysheds, moving ridiculously heavy bales to make cubbies, oblivious to the discomfort of the hay working its way through our clothing, until we grew bored, then itchy. We would run down to the creek and swim, ride motorbikes, play in the empty workers’ accommodations. But there was always work to do.

We were just young enough to escape most of it and only had small chores, but I was just old enough to recognise the way their lives and their work blurred into each other, seamlessly. I was just old enough to recognise the breadth of their hospitality and I treasure those values I learned from them to this day. Nobody “brings a plate” to my house.

I had other friends of course, town friends, but it still wasn’t far to go to reach wilder parts, slow river beds where we collected dragonfly wings and hunted for leeches. I spent many afternoons during the week riding “my” horse through the pines with the doctor’s daughter. Her mother and mine had started the local chapter of Riding for the Disabled and I took care of Misty in exchange for my freedom.

Freedom. Summer and freedom. That is my country.

I have no national pride or national identity. I lack sentimentality. My family is spread all around the globe and I now live in Melbourne, a city I love and will always belong to. In spite of that, I can still raise a tear listening to Hey True Blue or Tenterfield Saddler. I still know, when I hear Dorothea McKellar’s My Country, that she is speaking for me.

I love the sunburnt landscape of my childhood. It isn’t an easy place. It is hot and dry and hard. But it is golden. And it’s air is sweet. And it is home.

CerebralMum - You have no idea what a flurry of activity this post set in motion. I went within 20kms of the snow - just past Jindabyne - in 2006 and I could swear I took photos, but I cannot find them anywhere. The photos are in my mind, I just wish I could post them to my blog as well.

This post is a perfect start of summer post. If only we were having some summer here! The weather is all haywire and right now it’s blowing a gale and probably about to thunder. This time last year I was snorkelling. It isn’t hot enough to go and do that just yet.

Only In Dreams..

I’m watching a Roy Orbison documentary. I’ve always liked his music and a while ago we saw a tribute show which was absolutely amazing. I figure everyone knows the Pretty Woman song but there was so much more to his career than that. So might I suggest while I enjoy the documentary, you click on this link to you tube and listen to one of his songs you never heard of before?

Back tomorrow with the weekly wrap up. Have a lovely Saturday evening, ya’all!

A Journey Along The Road To Stopping Online Scammers

Aside from the blog and the commenting and the housework and preparing to start my business, a few days ago I got on a bus to a different kind of journey. I have been on this journey before and I’d like to tell you a little about it. I’ve become a spammer - but for a good cause. ;)

Search Engines Save Scam Victims

Joe Wein runs a website on the internet which is dedicated to stopping 419 scammers - as well as spammers who send you emails you don’t want. Joe maintains an online list of scammer email accounts and scammer emails, all of which are spidered by the search engines. This means if a potential scam victim types in a scammers email address, one of the very first hits they will get will be Joe’s website. Joe also runs the Scam-O-Matic tool which can look at an email and tell you whether it is a scam or not. He is frankly a technical genius and I’m not saying that just because he’s my friend. ;)

Blogs Can Save Them Too -

Sephy also runs four blogs which post scammer emails - the links to them are under sites I love in my sidebar - and there’s a few other sites around which do this. All of them are unique and necessary websites because no one person gets all the scam emails these scammers send out. It is estimated that there are over 100,000 419 scammers in Nigeria alone - that does not count those who have moved to countries like the USA, Canada and the UK. Dubai and India are the newest hotspots for scammers.

Shut Down The Email Accounts!

A lot of people ask me - why don’t “they” shut down the scammers email accounts? Many of the email services do - which creates an issue with the scammer email list. Currently on the list there are over 172,000 scammer email addresses, and there’s also over 140,000 old email addresses which had been recently cut from the list because it had become far too large. From time to time, Sephy and I and a few of the other scambaiters take a bit of our time to email all the lads on the list - all the “bounces” where the mail server says “this account has been closed” and other error messages are fed back to Joe, and the list can be cleared of closed email addresses.

How many do I send each day?

For the past 2 days I have been sending out 990 emails a day from 20 email accounts = 19,800 emails a day!. It generally takes me about an hour to do this. Once I get into “the zone” and have some music playing it’s just a matter of copy and paste. I send two emails per account, 495 scammer email addresses in each one of those emails, all as blind carbon copy - BCC. At this early stage roughly 50% of the email accounts bounce, I’ll have some better figures on that when we’re done.

What Is In The Email I Send?

The email I send tells the scammers that I have a significant amount of money ready to send to them and I need the bank account details to transfer the funds - all the bank account details sent to me by the scammers are passed on to the proper authorities, they get investigated and the majority of them are shut down by law enforcement. This can mean some victims get their money back when the accounts are investigated. So in general, this is a great way to be spending some of my time. ;) The last time we did this, literally thousands of bank accounts were reported.

What Replies Do I Get?

For the scammers whose email accounts are not closed and do not bounce -

  • some of them reply with abuse because they’ve been on the list a while and they’ve seen a few of these emails from us
  • some of them think this is an “accidentally sent email” and they jump at the chance to steal easy money
  • at least 10% of them respond with bank account details
  • another 40-60% respond asking me to send money by Western Union - these email addresses are saved and re-emailed with a request for bank account information which yields another decent amount of bank accounts
  • some of them take this opportunity to send us their scam emails, which all get added to a few of the websites which keep these emails available to the search spiders
  • some of them reply with some quite odd things indeed
  • some of the classic responses get put aside to be sent a telephone number where they can call me and I can waste a bit of their time and money chatting to them - generally not understanding what they are trying to say to me

Once we have cleaned the list thoroughly, we’ll be hooking a lot of these lads up with the baiting tool, so they can spend their time corresponding with fake victims instead of real ones.

This Can Be Funny Too -

One of the most hilarious things that happens is - the scammers go out and create brand new email accounts which are virtually identical to the one we address the email to. Usually we make it something like charles.soludo or mariam.abacha (two of the most popular names the scammers use) but this time we thought we’d have a bit of fun with it. Emails are being sent to the perfect err.. ph@llus. And so far the scammers have created about 50 different versions of this email address! They are very creative about it - I saw one today that spelt ph@llus with 3 l’s.. phalllus, I almost fell off my chair laughing.

Share The Amusement -

I thought today I would show you a few of the emails I have received from scammers over the past few days but I warn you, these scammers have trouble turning caps lock off.. ;)

You foll do not contact me again

TAHNK YOU VERY MUCH I DONT NEED THE MONEY TAKE IT YOURSELF FOOL 4 LIFE.

ARE YOU SERIOUS I NO BE MUGU ABEG

YOU CANT EAT ME IS ME THAT WILL EAT YOU I EAT MUGU MORE THAN YOU COME LET ME SHOW YOU THE NEW WAY

how are you i will want you to send the feels to my name

are u sure this email is for me i do not understand you

This scammer explains why not to email him on the old email account anymore -

How are you today, I received your mail and am happy you received the check, I don’t want you to sent me email to my other address because I just find out that some one is using it which is not me so I decided to use this one by opening this one for private between me and you ok with other name, so I want you to change your email address and reply me from the new email, which i use in sending you this email, so that I can know it is you ok. Immediately I receive your mail I will sent you the bank account information’s you will use and send the money ok.

This scammer doesn’t want the full 6 million dollars which I have to send him. He settles for a much more reasonable amount -

Thank you very much for your update. As soon as the funds have made available kindly proceed and transfer the total sum of £10 Pounds to my friend in United kindom

This scammer thinks I am also a scammer, and apparently not well versed in English. I hope he’s wrong, it’s the only language I know!

Local…………Ur english is not good enough to convince..try and improve from ur local way of composing english. Lollllllllllllllllllllllllllll

This scammer isn’t too sure whether I am legit or not but just in case -

ARE YOU STILL LEAVING THIS LIFE OF LIES AND RECONFIRM YOUR INFORMATION.

This scammer has a tale the likes of which are a little.. unbelievable -

Thank you very much for your email and update. However i think my email address account is being hacked because as i was about to send you a reply after i read your email from my email account, the message disappeared right in front of my very eyes. I was shocked. I do not know why someone will want o hack into my email account but for security reasons i have stopped using the email account and as soon as i am able to get a secure email account i will notify you.

In fact there seems to be an apparent rash of dodgy goings on -

Please I have changed to this email because someone is spying my email, so please be carefull not to send email apart from here.

And this scammer is having troubles too -

You should desist from writing mail to Lu’s email address and stop further communication with him via phone because his phone was bugged and email hacked. Disregard a email from Lu’s email and even calls because the Police is on his trail but with my position and influence as a Bank Excutive, (even though he can’t spell his position so how good can his influence be?) i will make sure thatthe funds is secured for Lu and yourself.

And this scammer is apparently being terrorised by his employees trying to steal his monies -

Ok infect I have been having problem with my employees in our company that wanted to take over my business fund but with God be the glory that the will not succeed with their terrorist act. So I have decided to write you with my alternative mail address so that you can only communicate with me

This scammer is not too sure how soon he can get his stolen from another scammer monies -

I will want to believe that what you meant to say was that the money would be sent by friday of this week and not friday of next week.

The scammers love Western Union but they seem to be never quite sure how to spell it. I would have thought all the time they spend at their local Western Union with those big black and yellow signs that coincidentally say “Western Union” might have given them a clue. Here’s some of the spellings -

WESTAN UNION - western unnion - wester union - westernunion - western uniuon - westan unin - westner union - westenr union -

Speaking Of My Balcony

I went to test out the new lens and have a few pics for you.

Lavender
My new lavender plant, which I have had for maybe three weeks and it has taken off like a rocket. Does anyone know, if you want to cut off the older lavender heads is there a certain place you should snip them?
Wisteria
My wisteria - it is a pink version called “summer wisteria”. I’ve had it for almost a year now. I love it!
My Herb Garden
My new herb garden which seems to be quickly outgrowing the pot it was put into - I did not expect it to take off quite so much. There is basil, italian flat parsley, chives and a capsicum tree. It smells incredible and I have used the herbs in my cooking twice now. Right behind it you can see one of my two tomato plants which I surrounded with chives because I got an 8 pack seedling tray. Both the chives and the tomato plant have doubled in size in just over a week!
Flowering Tomato Plant
The second tomato plant. Both tomato plants are already flowering, I think this is a good sign? I have been inspired by some fellow bloggers who have been growing their own foods. I decided to plant herbs and tomatoes but now I have a stack of pots without anything in them, so I may expand my new hobby. ;)
Fuchsia
My dwarf fuchsia which has been repotted and is very happy by the look of things.

We have re-potted maybe 75% of our plants and we have gone through 6 bags of potting mix! We still need to get a few more pots and potting mix to finish the job. I go out every night and water the plants just before I cook dinner. It is such a peaceful time for me. It is just starting to get dark, I can smell the sea breeze drifting my way and the stars start appearing - and you can see them so clearly here without all the big city lights.

Tonight I am going to give them a good dose of fertilizer when I water them. They always enjoy that. The plants seem as happy by the change in location as we are. All the plants have new growth and the ones that can flower have buds all over the place. They get the morning and mid-day sun and miss out on that painful afternoon sun, which makes them happy I think.

Just so I know, do you prefer thumbnail pics so the page can load faster and then you can click on the ones you would like to view closer? Let me know in the comments..

Design Inspirations

This new blog design is inspired by some odd things. I won’t lie to ya’all about that. I thought you might be interested in the design process and how it all came about.

Knowing Nothing -

Where I started with this was not even knowing how customizable these templates were, whether they could be changed at all, whether I might pay someone to design one that looks incredible for me, whether it was worthwhile investing in a paid theme, whether I could use my existing header.. these were the questions swarming around in my brain before I began to play with Wordpress at all.

Finding A Good Base

Courtney Tuttle is a blogger I have been reading for a while, and someone I trust when it comes to Search Engine Optimization. This was a topic I didn’t know a lot about but I did want to make sure my theme was optimized for the search engines. Courtney happens to have spent some serious time optimizing popular themes and you can see them all here - Search Engine Optimized Wordpress Themes.

Freedom Green & Widgetized & Optimized -

The theme I chose originally looked like this -
Freedom Green & Widgetized
It certainly looked fantastic but I wanted something unique. The Other Half was about to take a week of holidays, so we sat down to play with the theme. He is excellent with technical stuff. I am good with ideas. The two of us together created this beautiful theme.

Inspiration From The Kitchen -
Silicone Cupcake Tray
My Mother bought me this set of silicone cupcake trays. I love the shade of blue you see here. It is best described as Cobalt Blue and you see it often in glass. I have some glass things in that color too.
Blue Glass
So when I was looking for a background color I took this cupcake tray in and said “Let’s get the background color as close to that as we can”. I think we managed it.

Inspiration From Windows Vista -
Windows Vista Inspiration
The colored bar which was in my header graphic is from a theme for Simple Machines Forums - SMF for short. SMF is the engine which runs my Fraudstars forums. A long time ago when we were looking at themes I had seen the Windows Vista theme and I loved that graphic. It actually comes from a background image of Vista, though we were unable to figure out exactly where in the background image.

Theme Imitates Life -
Jervis Bay New South Wales
After we spent half a day working on the theme, The Other Half and I went for a beach walk. Out in the water I could see all the colors of my theme. There is that dark blue, there is the teal green, sometimes the ocean looks just like that Windows Vista graphic.

You Can Do It -

If you don’t have the knowledge to do a new theme but you have some time on your hands and you’re willing to play around with graphics programs you will be able to create something you love.

Settle In And -

Make yourselves comfortable. I intend to stick with this theme for at least 12 months. I want stability for my readers and for me. It is important to me that it looks good and I think the theme we designed does look amazing. I also intend to stick with the back end which is behind it - the plugins won’t change, I won’t be adding new things for quite some time, and I’ll be staying with Wordpress for the foreseeable future.

Today is Tuesday Think Tank day, and I would be posting that before going to bed in a few hours if I were not utterly exhausted. It will be posted tomorrow, which will be Wednesday here but it will be Tuesday somewhere in the world I’m sure.. ;)

Later this week I will talk about the inspiration for the color scheme and the process of changing to Wordpress that should have been simple but turned into a trip to Las Vegas with Satan without any cash to get a hotel room or bet on roulette. In other words, very little sleep - or fun - was had by all.

It has been a long week of struggling with code, struggling with servers, struggling with plugins, struggling with importing the blog from blogger only to find that the permalinks were not the same, and having to work out a fix for that. And now, there’s going to be a long couple of weeks going back and editing every post individually - because there is no simple way to bring the photos across, and I figure I might as well redo the categories at the same time. The theme was the simplest and easiest thing we did - it was also the first thing we did. Each time we got a problem sorted, a new problem appeared. The Other Half’s holidays disappeared into a void of trying to make this blog work. I cannot tell you the amount of hours it took. Far too many for something that should have been simple, right?

Still, we survived it with only one major meltdown by me earlier today when I felt like giving up entirely, and now here we are. I am sure I will look back on this one day and laugh, but it’s going to be a long time.. I love the blog design. I’m not as keen on Wordpress as I was when I started this process, though. It is better than blogger, but a technical nightmare I hope to wake up from in the morning. Please, let me wake up from a decent nights sleep and let everything be working!

Edit to add - Ok, for now I am turning the math plugin off, until I can work out what is wrong with it. If you had a problem with it can you please comment with exactly what was happening? I edited it to be simple numbers only because I did fail maths and I didn’t want it to be too much work for people..

I’m off to bed - I’m putting the blog into the capable hands of Sephy once he wakes up, and he’ll approve your comments. It is only the first comment which needs approving, after that you’re all set. ;)

About Letting it go

Many of you have seen or commented on a recent post here - Letting Go.., about one of Snoskred’s friends who has been battling with depression for a long time. Well, I am that friend. In fact, I have been battling it for longer than eight months. It’s only been in this time that we have been working on getting myself sorted out. Up until now, it’s been a lot of going through the motions, ultimately leading me back to where I started. I’d even learned the “right” things to say to appease her and make it look like things were going well. Of course, that led to her having false hope in me, and ultimately to the point where I needed to be shocked into action. I needed a major wake-up call.

That call finally came on Tuesday, when a very bleak picture of my world was presented - one where I’d be on my own, with nobody caring about me and about turning my life around. It would be hell on earth for me. From there, I had two options - 1) wake up and start to act on making myself better, or 2) ignore it and go forth on my own, with no support. After we finished our discussion, I went for a walk and then posted about my commitment to change. Included in that post was something that I hadn’t done before - make myself accountable for my actions. I also posted a comment on Craig Harper’s blog about my commitment to change. If you’re not reading his blog, you really should - it’s a great source of information about how to go about improving yourself.

After that, I then read the Letting Go post over here. I knew right away that it was about me, and essentially reinforced that I had to make the choice - shape up or ship out. It sounds harsh to think of it that way, but that is what it is. I’ve used up my chances, and now it’s time to prove myself. It’s making the small steps that lead to big things. It’s committing myself to doing the things that we had discussed all the way back in November - such as seeking out professional help. It’s about breaking the cycle of yes, ok, I’ll do that, wait a couple of months without doing anything, back into the hole.

As Snos said in her comment that she made today - this post was the catalyst. I’ve gone to see a doctor and have received an unofficial diagnosis of dysthymia - a mild form of depression - one that, without treatment, can last for a very long time. I received some samples of an antidepressant and start taking one a day from tomorrow. I was also told to get a consultation with a counselor to start with counseling appointments.

It’s definitely a start, but it’s a long road and I know that there will be ups and downs. I need to keep myself honest and that starts with myself. I mentioned yesterday the Post-It® notes that have begun to surround my monitor. One of them says “I will hold myself accountable for following my plans”. Part of that is posting a photo from when I go out to walk; it’s also keeping you all updated on my progress via my weekly updates. I’d really appreciate it if you all would help me out with the accountability - it doesn’t have to be constant, but the odd reminder will not hurt. :)

Lastly, this wouldn’t have happened if Snos didn’t care about me - she could have said “Fine, you’re on your own” and let me spiral. However, it is like she said in one of her comments - we are there for each other - it’s not always emotional support - most of the time it’s just to shoot the breeze and share what’s going on with our lives, or to solve a problem that one of us is having with a program or site. Thanks for letting me post this over here :)

I am posting this here, and also at Sephy’s Platzish, my blog.

Shameless self-promotion

Don’t worry, I’ve been given permission to do this. ;)

You may have seen a mention here about a threatening email that was sent to one of my scambaiting characters recently. I’ve been communicating (as that character) with the scammer, and it is a great example of how a scammer can try to manipulate a victim into doing whatever they want done - almost all of the time it is money.

You can check out the letters back and forth over at my blog.

Morten Harket - the voice of an angel.

In preparation for a “Men we love to watch” post later today, here is my favourite a-ha song of all time. I’d say 99% of people reading this will never have heard this song before, so click play and turn it up, then close your eyes. You won’t miss any lovely Morten photos because the video is just cartoons but it is the only version of this song I can find on you-tube. Enjoy.

Drop back a little later for Morten in pictures. ;)

Blogging Chicks Comment Challenge.

I mentioned yesterday that I was setting myself a new blog commenting task.

So, there’s apparently 820 blogging chicks blogs. If I comment on 10 per day, this will take me 82 days. :) Just under three months. And, during that time surely more will be added to the blogroll.

I really don’t think I have the time for an all out comment assault like NaBloPoMo was, where I was doing 100 comments a day. Even 20 might be a stretch at the moment given everything on my plate. However, if I push myself to do 100 a day it will take me 9 days which is much more reasonable to me. I’ll have to see how it goes. I want to be able to keep on top of all my other projects as well - and keep up with my art, and watch at least two West Wing episodes a day.

If you are a blogging chick who has arrived here after I have commented on your blog and you would like to try challenging yourself to comment, you might want to bookmark this page - it has all the current blogs on it. Once you click on a link, it should change color which makes it easier to keep up with who you’ve read.

And, in honor of Paris Hilton going to prison, here’s a lovely a-ha song named Cosy Prisons which almost could have been written about her if you listen to the lyrics. ;) Enjoy! But be warned, once this song gets inside your head it’s going to be there for a while.. ;)

Remember what I said here about an a-ha secret? :) I liked the light show on this one though, and I already posted the live version of this song before.

Morten Harket from a-ha is on the list of men I love to watch, keep an eye out for that post coming to you as a surprise soon.. ;) I almost did it today but got sidetracked, the a-ha DVD’s are sitting here on my desk so I can take my own screenshots.

My sister, the beeyotch.

I have not spoken to my sister since Sunday the 19th of November. Long-term readers of the blog may remember what happened, if not you want to read these two posts which will explain pretty much everything. I did send her two emails in January or so, but that did not go down well either - see here.

My parents did end up seeing their grandkids sometime in February or March, when they had to visit Sydney for a few days and my sister decided to grace them with her presence by staying in their hotel - and my parents had to pay for her presence - and it was very expensive, something like $300 a night.

This evening at our usual weekly chinese dinner, Mum advised me that my sister may be coming down to stay sometime in the next two weeks. She also let spill a few facts she’d been keeping to herself - that my sister went to Adelaide and charged the hotel to my parents Visa card. It wasn’t just one room because my sister is apparently incapable of travelling without an entourage. These days the entourage is her partner’s parents, who have been dragged here almost every time my sister has visited. It also wasn’t a reasonably priced hotel, because my sister does not do anything less than 5 star. It also would have involved charges for room service, because my sister likes to eat plenty of room service when in an expensive hotel.

Mum did not say how much the charge was for but by the sound of things it was not cheap. She said “Well, at least I didn’t have to pay the airfares this time” - I said did you check your frequent flyer statement? It’s very likely my sister used their points without asking. After all, they have enough banked up to fly round the world several times.

My sister has all their numbers, visa card, frequent flyer, etc. She’s not afraid to use them, she’ll do it without asking. It’s almost as if she thinks she is entitled to do this. If my Mum gives me permission to put something on her visa which she has done before, I write down the number, charge it on the net, and then tear up the paper. I haven’t memorised it or got it tattooed on the back of my hand or anything. I don’t have their frequent flyer number or the pin to log into it.

So while I fight the 419 scammers daily, I have one of the biggest scammers of all time within my own family. She wasn’t speaking to me at first, and now I’m not speaking to her because I think her behaviour has been disgraceful. If she comes down here I won’t be seeing her, I have no desire to. I do hope the kids might be able to make it down the street to see me, but given her lack of care for my relationship with them, it might not happen. I’m over it at this point. Really. I adore my nephews more than anyone will ever know and it tears me up to know how they are treated by her and her partner. I think it’s safest just to “harden my heart” so it doesn’t hurt as much as it does.

But speaking of spending, my Dad has committed to buying a car. I’m foggy on the details but I know it is a really expensive car. He’s worked hard and he deserves to treat himself. I’m just not sure what the point is of buying such a hugely pricey one. It’s over $60,000 that much I do know, it might be closer to $75,000. He would have won that much at the local RSL pokie machines since he’s been here. You wouldn’t believe his luck in that area - on average he wins around $3,000 a week.

Playing the pokie machines is not a good thing, I do not recommend it to anyone but he enjoys it, he has a limit of how much he’ll put in and if he doesn’t win he walks away once he hits that limit. He works 7 days a week (though the weekend days he leaves about 1pm to go home and have a nap before going back to close the shop) and he works very hard.

I love my parents. I’m seriously considering disowning my sister. I do not know who she is and I do not know what happened to the person she once was, the person I completely adored. I can’t sit here hoping that person will come back. It’s pointless. Focus on the good, or something.. ;)

Website to die for..

The Other Half got a new laptop recently which came to me as a great surprise - he did not tell me he was buying it. It’s a new kind of laptop and the screen is a sort of touch screen you can write on and draw on. It is also a lot smaller than the average laptop and therefore we had a problem, none of the bags we found at any of the local retailers would fit. So being that I am the female, and being that I’m at home all day, I was given the task of trying to find something online. Someone in my google reader had written about lovely laptop bags not long ago but I couldn’t find the post, so I googled.

Sometimes when you google you get ads on the side of your search. I usually ignore them but this time there was a tempting link and I clicked on it. I was instantly whisked to one of the best shopping websites I have seen on the internet, ever. You know when someone does something incredibly well and it impresses the heck out of you? I was highly impressed by Rushfaster - and they are an Australian company based in Sydney with a showroom and everything. You bet I want to visit the next time we make the trip.

I should probably mention at this point that I may be female but I’m not your average female. I don’t love wearing high heeled shoes and makeup. I do have a love affair with handbags and handbag shops. The other half regularly has to drag me away from windows where I am looking at bags. I try not to cry when he won’t buy me a new one. It is very difficult because I want all the handbags on the planet.

So what is so good about their website? Firstly the layout is clean and crisp. I’ve been a fan of green on websites for some time now. It is well laid out and easy to find what you are looking for. They have a wall of bags. They have products I’ve never even thought of let alone seen anywhere though that may be because I keep being dragged away from bag shops. Like these bags with solar panels in them. Lots of photos of the bags, which it seems they have taken themselves. I love people with a sense of humor - at the bottom of the site it says - Don’t steal our images, that would be most uncool.

Best of all these people really tell you the kind of things you want to know when looking for a bag without being there in person. For example, when I am looking for a handbag, I want to know where I can put my mobile phone. This bag here (which I fancy) has - # 1x main compartment with small zippered compartment inside # 1x frontal compartment.

However it is in the laptop bag area where these guys really excel. You can choose by brand and model number - if yours is there. If it’s not, just enter in the laptop dimensions and it gives you all the bags your laptop will fit into. This was perfect for what I was doing, and exactly what I needed to find. The Other Half is still trying to make a decision on what to buy - he’s a slow decision maker. While I’ve been writing this he’s sent me 5 different links to bags on the site via skype which he’s considering. I’ll let you know what he chooses.

I could go on for days because it is not often that on the internet you find something so perfect. We get promised a lot but websites rarely deliver what we need when we need it. This is an example of a company who have worked very hard to think about what people will want from them, and then they have gone and made it so. If the site was designed by a company (it doesn’t say) then I hope they get to work designing other websites in the way they have designed this one.

No, they haven’t paid me anything to say all this - but when I am impressed with something I want to tell everyone and when I find a company doing something great I like to share it. I know a lot of Aussie readers read this and here in Australia we have not exactly been overrun with excellent online shopping, so when it comes to me as a surprise I’m going to tell ya’all.

Blogocracy Blogging Experiment

Tim Dunlop has a little blogging experiment going on. It’s very interesting and comes just at the right time for me, because I’ve rehashed the blogs I am reading in google reader and I have some space for new ones.

The first question Tim has asked is - If you change the government, do you really change the country?

I think the answer is no. Most people in the country honestly don’t care about the government or what they are doing. People just want to live their lives relatively peacefully. Government is only interesting when they’re going to give us some money, or if they’re going to do something for us. That’s why change does not happen often.

Most people get to the polling booth, and they basically ask themselves - How am I doing under this current government? Is everything generally ok? If yes, let’s vote for the people who are in now, because nobody likes change, people are afraid of change, let us stick with what we have now.

The reason this government has been in as long as they have is, “people” remember those high interest rates when they get to the polls. Regardless of what happened in the lead up to the election, regardless of who promised what, they fear a return to interest rates they cannot afford. Many voters are home owners.

For all those who take sides and argue that “this” or “that” will change people’s minds and make them vote for one side or the other, realistically it does not. Polls don’t matter on election day. That is because voting is compulsory in this country. It is not something that only those who care about politics and the future of this country do - at least some of the people voting honestly could not care less about the election but they are forced to vote. In reality it is likely that they make up the majority of people who vote - which means the majority of people who vote could not care less.

If change happens, by some miracle, most people find it is a case of “Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss”. Life will go on, the same as before. Things might get better, things might get worse, if they get worse the change will not last long, only 4 years.

Politics is a dirty game. In reality for many of us, it has nothing to do with real life. We’re more concerned with the politics of the workplace, the politics of our own homes. And fair enough too.

The other answers - from people much smarter than I. :) Very interesting reads.

The Assasination Scam

Sephy got a great example of the newest weapon used by the 419 scammers yesterday. His baiting character - a very famous sports person who I can’t name for the scammers can google too - is apparently being stalked by a spy team in preparation for the execution team to arrive and kill him.

How does this scam work? Basically they threaten people into giving them money. The scammers tell victims that they have been paid money to kill them, but if the victim pays money they will not kill them. Of course the scammer does not even know who they are, where they are, or anything like that - he’s just taking a chance that this email will freak them out and make them pay money. Can you imagine an elderly person getting a threatening mail like that? Of course they pay. ;(

You can see the threat email for yourself here - Sephy’s Platzish -

This will not come as a surprise.

Ms Rein has made the decision to sell the Australian part of her business, because her husband wants to be Prime Minister more than he wants to back her up as a husband. Oh, she probably wants to redecorate the Lodge herself, so it’s not an entirely selfless choice, however it shows that an ambitious man can be the downfall of a highly successful woman. It was predictable and we all saw this one coming a mile off, but I cannot disguise my disgust.

As yet there seems to be no outcry of outraged women, which is highly surprising to me. Could it be all the feminists vote Labor and they don’t want to say anything for fear of losing yet another in a long string of elections to a man who honestly looks like he should be on the muppet show?

What is right is what is right, regardless of which party you support. The fact that Kevin has not said - she made a mistake but her business concerns have nothing to do with me as a politician and we’ll put whatever procedures in place to make sure everything is 100% above board and nobody can have any complaints of favoritism or whatever. She’s my wife, this is her business, and I don’t give a shit how politically damaging her mistakes in business can be to me, because I’m a man with a set of balls who can stand up for himself and say hey, leave my wife alone. You want to pick on someone? Pick on me.

However, he did not do that, and what he’s saying to everyone by the course he is taking is - you win. You want to pick on anyone else in my family? I’ll convince them to give up whatever you want if it means I can have the top job. Bully me some more, it’s fine. It’s perfectly ok, because I’m going to cave whenever I have to just to shut you people up.

Ms Rein, this choice you have made is absolutely a backward step for women in this country.
