WordPress 2.5 – I hate it.

Sephy wrote a great post about WordPress 2.5 – Not coming here soon. A lot of his thoughts on the subject are similar to mine. It is highly disappointing to see a huge step backward in so many areas. :(

I’ve been playing with it on my test blog for a few days now and the more I use it, the more I despise it. That’s a strong word to use, but seriously that is how I feel. I utterly despise it. I am truly angry that anyone would do this to the WordPress I know and love. Whoever is behind it needs to spend some time with normal people who actually use WordPress on a daily basis, watching what they do and how they do it.

Next week I will be setting up a test blog for those bloggers who I host blogs for, so you can go in and see if you like it and then make a decision on whether to upgrade or not. For me, the decision is made. This blog, and the Scam Warning blog, and probably the other blogs I write for will not be upgrading anytime soon.

Apologies for vanishing the last few days, but I have wanted to spend some serious time with 2.5 and see if I could maybe grow to like it. It seems I can’t go backwards – that is what is making it difficult. I mean I can’t even tell you what is supposed to be happening on that widgets page, or why anyone in their right mind would suggest this was an easier way of doing things than the current drag and drop.

Not to mention the fact that the new upgrade plugins automatically system opens some massive security holes. I mean huge. We thought the previous versions were unsafe.. this truly could allow unscrupulous people to write plugins that have back doors in order to get in and add links to your blog, and all kinds of stuff like that. :(

  1. you know me–not very savvy with this stuff, but lately i had the worst problem trying to post comments on wordpress blogs–it was driving me nuts! but somehow it got fixed. . .

  2. It is definitely not a good thing when you release an upgrade to a system and it is described as going backwards. I too, will take your guidance on upgrading.

  3. I have been reading a lot of comments from people that hate it more than the ones who love it and since I’m not the most technical and had a horrible time with my last upgrade I will wait till the bugs get worked out…Thanks

  4. Snoskred,

I was at WordCampDallas where Matt presented WP 2.5. I hated it then and I don’t want it on my blog(s). I hate the changes made to the Write page. Hate it, hate it, hate it!

I wouldn’t mind if they ADDED some new features, but DON’T be removing stuff that’s already there! I like WP as is on my blog, thank you very much MATT!

Oh, I would like to talk to you about adding the “Related Posts” plugin, or if there are technical issues with adding it etc. At WordCamp, it seems the consensus is that having the Related Posts plugin along with the Popular Posts plugin running on a blog helps people arriving from online searches find “like posts”, rather than always having to manually add them at the end of each post. ???

  5. My only concern with NOT upgrading is support etc. But if you’re happy to leave it as is, so am I :) I will continue to bow to your superior tech savvyness when it comes to upgrades.

  6. I plan to wait until I upgrade especially as I need a theme upgrade too and I have altered mine substantially. I have read enough negative things to put me off for now at least. I also want to be sure that any plugins work or are updated before I make a move.

The problem is that eventually new things will be written just for 2.5 and the support will not be there for the golden oldy version.

  7. I’ve upgraded all my blogs to WP 2.5 and am enjoying it.

2.5 recovers the capacity to have all posts available under the Manage function, now separately catalogued under published, scheduled and drafts. I like that.

The widgets now allow more usability for the Text boxes – naming them rather than using guesswork. The only hassle I’ve had is with text boxes containing RSS details.

Saving posts as I go doesn’t automatically take me back to where I was before. I can choose to go there or to the main site.

The Pending Review status for posts is handy when you’ve got lots of posts that need attention.

    No regrets from me.

  8. Not really a lot of people seem to like the new WP version. I hope the developers will listen. I wondered where all your posts about scammers had gone. I loved those(as weird as that may sound)

  9. All the negative vibes about it have me a little nervous. I feel like I’ve only just gotten used to the dashboard I have. Of course, I’d get used to it but I’m in no hurry.

  10. Oh dear. I have just discovered that I’m going to have to get used to it anyway. Sometime overnight the wordpress.com blogs have been upgraded and I still have one of those.

  11. I recently upgraded the majority of my blogs to WP 2.5 simply because I find it so much better then the old WP ACP. Maybe it is just my preference, but I personally don’t find it to be a step backwards as you describe it.

I find it much more intuitive to use, and the plugin panel as you describe to be less secure then the older versions, you are still quite welcome to upgrade your plugins the old fashioned way and upload the files to upgrade them, the automatic upgrading is only for those plugins that are hosted WP Extend.

  12. I’ve been secretly playing with WP 2.5 for the past few days and I think that I can get use to it. I’m not sure about making galleries with the new multimedia manager, but I’ll go with the flow for now.

  13. I was nervous about making the switch myself…I think I read this post the other day and thought ha! someone doesn’t like it! another reason to put it off!

But then today I had some extra time, decided that I was sick of seeing the “upgrade to 2.5″message everytime I logged in and bit the bullet.

I’m not sure what I think yet.

  14. I’ve upgraded all my blogs to WordPress 2.5 and I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Maybe I didn’t use the old one enough, through when I did it used to drive me mad.

Version 2.5 seems a lot smoother and once you know where everything is it’s a piece of cake to work with.

  15. Things have changed on the wordpress.com dashboard… I haven’t found any particular reason to dislike it yet… except for one thing. I used to be able to edit a draft post simply by clicking on ‘new post’ and then a link above the blog editor saying “you have one draft post”… but not any more. If you hit the ‘new post’ option, there is no longer a direct link to the draft post. Heyyyyyy…. I was USING that!

  16. I haven’t really found any reason to not like it so far other than that its left a couple of plugins i really want to use not compatible with WP2.5
