A Little Competition To Celebrate My Page Rank Drop

This time last week, my site www.snoskred.org had a page rank of 4. Now, I seem to have a page rank of 3. I cannot work out why this would be so - all the advertising I have been doing is over at the old site, which continues to have a page rank of 4. However Wendy Piersall reports that Mommybloggers seem to have been hit. If that’s the case, perhaps someone should let Google know I have kitties, and not kids!

So now, here’s the plan. I’m giving up on Google, giving up on keeping track of what they are doing. I am no longer going to check my page rank. I’m going to do whatever I want to do here at my own blog, without reference to Google at all - that includes paid posting. They can punish me for nothing, if they like. I’m just going to do my best not to care.

That means the return of paid posts to this blog - you may have noticed I had stopped doing them for a little while there. But instead of keeping the money for me, I want to give some of it back to my readers. Here’s how the competition works.

- Write about the competition on your blog and link back to my blog however you like in that post - you receive 5 entries (be sure to comment on this post with a link to your post so I can make sure you get your entries)

- Comment here on the blog - you receive 1 entry. You can comment as many times as you like during the month. Each comment = 1 entry

- I will be putting entries into the prize drawing bowl daily.

On the 14th of December, I will draw the winners.

1st prize is $30US cash sent to your paypal account

2nd prize is $20US cash sent to your paypal account

3rd prize is $10US cash sent to your paypal account

On top of that there will be 5 extra prize packs which will be posted out - these will contain a mystery prize based on which country you are in and what I can safely post there. If you don’t have a paypal account you can easily open one to receive the money. Any questions?

So let’s celebrate good times and page rank drops woohoo! ;) Congratulations to me, for whatever mysterious thing I did to deserve being treated this way by Google.

I’ve been hearing this complaint from several people about Google lowering their page rank for absolutely no discernible reason. Prior to that, it was Technorati, to which I complained endlessly, when they lowered our authority by *hundreds* each day. (I went from 777 to 88 in two short months.)

Your instinct is correct. Best to just stop caring.. since there’s not a bloody thing we can do about it anyway.

You can always tempt me with money. :P

Maybe the PR drop is more to do with the fact that you didn’t used to map to the http:// domain without the www

Sometimes trivial changes can bring about such changes.

  3. christine, 14. November 2007, 14:34

i have no idea what a page rank is or how to figure mine out.

but i am ok with that. i just blindly, and happily, write!

  4. Shrinidhi, 14. November 2007, 15:57

This competition should help you regain the lost PR with the links you’ll be getting. Of late several bloggers are starting competitions like this…

  5. Snoskred, 14. November 2007, 17:20

Chani - that technorati drop was logical and at least I can tell you exactly why it happened - it was due to a blogroll that you used to be on which put an actual link on every blog the blogroll appeared on. Then the blogroll changed to javascript and the robots who count links do not count javascript.

Once every 6 months Technorati check to see if you are still linked to from all the sites which were linking to you. When the robots went back to all those sites which had linked to you, they could not *see* the link anymore because it is now hidden to them in Javascript. Therefore the robots thought you weren’t being linked to from that site, and you dropped that link and consequently dropped points.

With the Google Page rank drops, nobody is sure why they drop or what is going on. Nobody from Google has the balls to come out and say ok, here’s the deal. They just do whatever they want to people. It reminds me of George Orwell’s 1984. They think they have the right to be Big Brother - and we have given them that impression. We have given them that power. Well no more, I’m taking mine back and ya’all should too.

Hari - I’ve got no idea why it is, and I’ll never know. They refuse to tell anyone what is going on. The only option I have is to go begging to them on my knees, filling in a form to say I did something wrong. Well as far as I know, I didn’t.

Christine - you can find out your page rank at http://www.digpagerank.com - just put in your url. Unfortunately if you want to do some of the paid posting type things, page rank is one of the things they measure a site by. But I think most of the paid posting companies are throwing PR out the window soon.

Shrinidhi - I have about 5,000 backlinks. According to the old page rank estimator I should have a 5 PR. The truth is, I don’t wish to regain page rank. I’m done with it. I waited ages and ages to get it on this domain and got a 4, and I thought ok that is it, we’re set now. Then someone mentioned they got a drop and I checked mine and I was back to a 3. Why give me a 4 if they were going to change it to 3?

Nobody knows. All I know is, I despise Google now. I’m done with them. Today I moved my blog reading to blog lines instead of Google Reader. I’m changing all my gmail accounts to email on my own domain. I am using a different search engine for my searching, and trying to find a new search engine for the blog here (the wordpress one isn’t too good) and I don’t use the google toolbar or google analytics here on this blog anymore. As soon as I can get all my photos moved over here, I’m removing as much of the old blog as I can.

Thanks for the comments all. :)

    Cheers,
    Snoskred

Hi Snoskred, that sucks… I know of so many good blogs that have been hit - it’s really not fair. I’m just waiting for mine to be hit at some point. I think you’re probably right not to worry about it much. I admire you for giving Google up - I’m not sure I could!

  7. cugat, 15. November 2007, 3:38

You’ll always have a page rank of 4 with me ;)

  8. Sophie, 15. November 2007, 4:23

I think that’s a pretty positive (and brave) attitude to take! I don’t think webmasters should continually be looking over their shoulder to make sure the big bad Googleman isn’t waiting to cut them down.

I went from PR6 to PR4, although some of my inside pages have PR5 which is very strange indeed…

  9. Jhianna, 15. November 2007, 10:55

Huh - I’d heard folks talk a little about Google’s Page Rank, but I hadn’t payed much attention to it.

Something is definitely wrong when I have a higher page rank thank you. Someone at Google is smoking something that they shouldn’t :)

  10. teeni, 15. November 2007, 13:14

I’m with cugat - your page rank is off the charts with me too. I honestly think it is the readers who should have the say in your rank. Anybody else’s ranking of your site means nothing. That’s my opinion anyway. ;)

Oh, and yeah, money is nice. I will link to your post. I would’ve done it for free too, though. :)

Hi, my old Blogger blog which has been around for 4 years are hit with a big FAT 0.

Reading this competition sure uplift me alot. :-) Well, not that I’m really that down to begin with. I just find the whole PR thing ridiculous. :-)

I will be back once I do my post. I want IN!

  12. swollenpickles, 16. November 2007, 13:39

Bad luck about the decrease. Google seems to be getting slap happy these days! I coped a slap and dropped off the SERPs. Used to be number one for “Swollen Pickles” (let’s face it, who else would want it?), now you have to filter through five pages of results (all linking to me) before you’ll find my actual site. How reliable does that make the Google search results then? GRRR!

After setting up my blogs and watching them at N/A or 0 Google rejigs the ranks and they go to 3, so I expect them to drop back down anytime soon!

    Oh well.

Oh free money, count me in.

  17. Anne Maybus, 18. November 2007, 6:37

I totally agree with your attitude, If we spend all our time working for a page rank or technorati authority I think we lose sight of what we are blogging about. Stay true to what you are doing with your blog. Your readers love it, so let the rest go jump!

  24. Lucynda Riley, 21. November 2007, 2:20

whats unreal is how some people, some of them with as many as 50 thousand back links were slapped with big fat zero’s. Google has no right to dictate to us who we can and cannot link to. I’m not about to let them stop me either.

  25. Matt Ellsworth, 21. November 2007, 3:38

I think the pr drop was a general drop across the board… even youtube went down… All of my sites went down except for the brand new ones - they went up… one of them went up past all others - why? It has about 3 outbound links…

I think that sites with more links are being hit harder than those with less links.

  30. Bruce, 21. November 2007, 13:26

Interesting analogy. It seems really weird to me that Google is doing this to the little person, when their entire business model is built upon selling links. what is Adsense other than a link selling program. Seems to me the Google is not following its own advice or rather they view some of these companies who broker link selling deals as a competitor and they want to crush the competitor before any real ground can be gained.

Afterall aren’t all links on the web actually paid links in some manner. Sure there are some instances still where links are freely given, but most links are paid for in some manner. Bloggers link to other blogs specifically Wordpress blogs for the comment link back to there blog. You can find this practice on thousands of blogs when they do their speed linking or what ever they call it. Then you have reciprocal links that is paying for a link with another link.

I just realized I have a blog post in me on this subject so I’ll have to write the rest of it on my blog.

Then they updated again. I dropped to a 2. I got depressed.
