Thanks for coming by my blog, http://changeservant.blogspot.com, to say hi. Have you made it through the Blogging Chicks blogs yet?

Liked this thoughtful post. I've refrained from using ads or other commercial features on my blog but I am not above doing so if I can do it tastefully.

Thanks again for visiting me in Richmond, VA, USA electronically.
CG2

Thanks for your comments guys, I think it is very much a to each their own type of thing, and everyone has their own saturation point on how much is too much advertising. :)

I really think non-profits could benefit a lot more from pay-per-post type of things. People out there are really generous people willing to donate to good causes - if they know about them. If they don't they'll spend their charity dollars where they always do instead of looking for new options. Most non-profits have an advertising budget, which they could use for this kind of thing.

I appreciate ya'all taking the time to read the post and comment. ;)

I rarely pay any attention to the ads in the sidebars on any of the blogs i read. I am not sure I have known any blogs i read to advertise a product for money right in a post. If they do so on occasion, ok, but if it happened in every post I'd likely go somewhere else. I look for content and community when i blog, and not products. That said, I have had people recommend products on their blog here and there and it doesn't bother me. i also have no problem with people who need extra cash advertising or doing the occasional paid post. In the end, like you said, it isn't a black and white thing. Lots of shades of gray.

I've employed the same strategy as you have with payperpost. Always follow a sponsored post up with a non sponsored one. I guess from personal experience I get turned off as soon as I see all paid posts and ads. It's a trap I have fallen for myself, but I'm trying to crawl out of it.

The one thing I'm not sure you mentioned is that for some people, generating some revenue from a site is a necessary evil.

It's probably not surprising that I agree with what you've written. ;)

Just to add about the manual links lists is that (and this is something that you've mentioned elsewhere) the lists made by Blogrolling are great, but all Technorati, Google and other spiders see is the javascript code, specifically the part that is in the "..." tags, which usually will be something along the lines of "Your browser does not support JavaScript". Thus, it doesn't see the links to the other blogs in the blogroll. The thing now is to get folks to actually take the initiative and put it on their blogs. ;)

As far as I know (I didn't go down the spice aisle during my last trip to the store), we still have the pepper steak seasoning available here. There are also some great chicken seasonings out there - the salt-free ones are some of the best. My favorite is Mrs. Dash (pretty much any variety of seasonings they have - it's all salt free).

I really like that DVD list idea, I should actually get the ball rolling on one for myself. The same thing applies for the books.

Sephy
http://sephyroth.blogspot.com

I think you make some good points. A lot depends on presentation. I can't honestly say that I would remove every blog that has commercial content, but will remove the ones that put it in my face or are crass about it.

The site I used as an example (The Thai site) was so blatant, so crass .. and... that was ALL he blogged about is how he can make money. I was totally turned off by it and removed him.

There are a few blogs on my blogroll that have the sidebar ads. As long as I am free to ignore them, it doesn't bother me.

I just don't want to be constantly "sold to" ~ and we need to have some places in our lives where no one has a commercial agenda.

It will be interesting to see what your other commenters have to say on this, too.

Peace,

~Chani
